Re: Texas HB 1096 - allows Houston to pass Breed Specific Legislation

Responsible Pet Owners Alliance needs your help one more time! HB 1096 passed the Senate Criminal Justice Committee yesterday with amendments.

RPOA was represented at the Hearing by Jeff Shaver, Houston attorney and Rottweiler enthusiast, who was able to get the necessary changes from the committee that we sought. Jeff did an excellent job or so we thought.

Thanks to all of you, there was an overflow crowd of approx. 100 people at the Hearing in Austin spilling out into the hallway -- accompanied by a barrage of phone calls, etc. All this with less than 24 hours notice!

However we have hit a snag with Senator Ellis's office and time is of the essence as HB 1096 will now go to a Senate Floor vote on the Local and Uncontested Calendar with no opportunity for changes.

We need a copy of what will go to the Floor and seem to be unable to get that from Ellis's office at the present time. Senator Ellis's office sent us a copy of the amendments only but states that they will be to the "Engrossed" Version of the bill.

Please contact the committee members listed below and tell them that:

"It appears that Senator Ellis's office is trying to go back to the Engrossed Version of HB 1096 -- which is NOT the version that the committee worked off of yesterday at the Hearing. If the correct version is NOT the one to advance to the Senate Floor for a vote, the media will be made aware of this."

That's all you need to say and I'm sure we can count on you to be polite - just make the phone calls and emails for us. Then maybe someone will respond to our request for verification that the correct version is being amended.
