Please Like and Share his facebook page so Luke can find his forever home. There is also a link to his medical fund site on the facebook page as we have $280 left to raise for his latest medical bill. Thank you! https://www.facebook....
“Loveable Luke” is a stunning blue/gray pit bull, HW negative, neutered, vaccinated, 8 to 10 months old, and good with other dogs. Very much a silly, playful, active puppy! Please read his story below and like/share his facebook page and fundraising website. We are not a rescue group, so we are just trying to do the right thing for this very deserving pup by spreading the word of his needs!
This puppy was found after he was dumped in Houston, TX. Luke was dehydrated, skinny, and in horrible pain from a severe hookworm infestation that caused painful, ulcerated intestines and bloody diarrhea. Although many people just passed him by—leaving him to eventually die from the worms or get hit by a car on the busy street-- a wonderful man named Mario picked him up off the side of the road and took him to a nearby vet despite not knowing how he would cover the costs of care. Despite his condition, Luke was extremely loveable and friendly to Mario. Mario is an “animal lover” friend of mine, and he reached out to me to join him in helping Luke! Luke stayed at the vet for over a week getting fluids and intestinal support, but he still had lingering rear-end pain from all the trauma and was on several meds as well as stool softeners. Just before he was slated to leave the clinic, he had an extremely painful rectal prolapse from the trauma caused by the hookworms. So, we had a purse string surgery performed.
After post-surgery release from the vet clinic, Luke was quickly adopted. He continued treatment for the hookworms and trauma that lingered in his intestines. Despite treatment, he suffered a second rectal prolapse and adopter had vet perform a second purse string surgery along with more meds to reduce inflammation, more pain meds and continuing stool softeners. Shortly thereafter, the adopters returned Luke with a few days notice. As if finding a foster quickly was not enough of a challenge, we learned that Luke still yelps when he poops and suffers a partial prolapse each time..so, clearly something was still going on inside of him that needed to be resolved before he suffered another full prolapse or something even worse.
Mario rushed Luke to a specialist on Wednesday, June 6th. We knew it would be expensive, but this boy needed an expert to immediately diagnose the issue since 2 surgeries with regular vets and never-ending medicines have afforded little relief. The specialist performed a fecal and conducted an ultrasound. The GREAT NEWS is they did not see anything on the ultrasound, and the specialist thinks that Luke’s chronic problems are due to all the havoc created by the lingering worms, some infection, and the trauma-caused inflammation, and they removed the purse string stitch (guess the stitch was not dissolvable and caused more pain). Luke was sent home with a bag of various medicines, dewormers, stool softeners, and fiber supplements that appear to be helping heal his intestines.
Luke is officially up for adoption. He really is a great, crazy, silly puppy that loves life and people/dogs—he just needs to finish out his medication, stay on his science diet food for intestinal support for a little while longer, and take some daily Metamucil/stool softeners while he heals from the effect of the intestinal worms/parasites.
