Cuba: La Isla Grande!

The best of Cuba: revolutionary history, faded colonial charm and Caribbean beaches

Wanderlust has teamed up with Exodus Travel to offer a truly unforgettable 16 day holiday!

In 1492 when Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba he described it as "the most beautiful land on Earth". As well as its beauty, Cuba offers a unique cultural experience with its blend of African and Spanish influences mixed with 50 years of communism.

No Cuba adventure holiday is complete without seeing the sites Cuba is famous for - the dilapidated colonial grandeur of Old Havana, the lively nightlife of Santiago and the restored splendour of Trinidad. This trip will also take you to the less well-known areas of Cuba where you can appreciate its natural beauty and rich heritage. We visit the Sierra Maestra, an area of steep, jungle covered mountains filled with bird life. It was in these mountains that Castro and Che Guevara coordinated the Revolutionary War. There is time to relax with two nights in Baracoa, a lively port town with great beaches and there is also the opportunity to take an optional catamaran trip to a remote Caribbean Island.

Total price including direct flights from Gatwick on Virgin Atlantic is only £1684!

An amazing adventure shared with friends: Cuba is fascinating, surprising and so interesting. You have to go for the culture, the people, the landscapes, the history, and of course the rum and the cigars! ;D

It is hard to find the right words to describe our amazing trip to Cuba as this country defies expectations and boggles the mind. Cuba is so unique, so contradictory and so inspiring. I am just so pleased to have experienced this beautiful country with a really fun group of people!

Hi Perdesi, I'm nothing to do with organising this trip but I think Geoff the organiser may be in Mexico at the moment so perhaps unable to reply. I've received my flight details so I would suggest that you contact Exodus directly and get the details from them. Hope that helps. See you soon! :)

Is anyone a SCUBA diver? Looks like there is great diving out there - and I would be up for it.

Hi there, both my friend and I are AOW and would love to dive in Cuba. Will be bringing our cards.

I also want to ask everyone to think about using any extra baggage allowance you might have to bring items like unwanted clothes, shoes, toiletries or cosmetics to donate to the poor of Cuba. There is some serious poverty there and people find it hard to get many basic things we take for granted. Therefore anything you can bring can be given to a charitable cause once we are there. It shouldn't be hard to find a worthy organisation.

Great idea Geoff - I don't mind going out and buying stuff to give away. What in particular do you think they might need?

      November 5, 2012

    • Geoff

I believe that things like soap, shampoo and toiletries are much appreciated because of a lack of availability locals. Clothes (especially shoes) are also too expensive for locals to buy. Personally I always have clothes I don't wear anymore and my family will go through their cupboards too for unwanted items.

Hello guys, I am getting excited about our trip :)

    3 quick questions:

If cash is king in Cuba how much should we bring? I cannot bring a credit card as mine is American Express...

Does anyone know what vaccinations are needed for Cuba? I have read some conflicting opinions.

What sort of 'kit' should I bring with me? Can anyone recommend a good brand of walking shoes?!

Any help welcome :) I live in North London if anyone wants to chat in person!

It is hard to say how much each person should bring because individual spending is such a personal thing. However I have been warned by people who have visited Cuba that it is an expensive country these days. Maybe Karol [masked] at Exodus can give more detailed advice. It is also useful to read the Exodus trip notes in full. The notes advise that you will need over £20 per day just cover food so that is over £300 in total just for your meals. The trip notes also give a full list of kit to bring and the best walking shoes or always the ones which fit the best. The staff at Cotswold Outdoors can help with fitting. With things like vaccinations it really is best to contact your doctor for the latest advice. Hope to see some of the group at our social night on 18 October. :-)

Hi everyone and Hi Geoff. Just a quick question.
Are you aware about any issue with the UK credit or debit card when used in Cuba, essentially at the cash machine? Some of my Italian friends, 3 years ago, were unable to collect money as all the cash Machine in Cuba apparently requested only and only 6 digit PIN CODE (Italy has 5 and UK 4). Anyone aware about similar problems from UK? Many thanks.Federica

Ok.Thank you..so the general rule should be to bring most of the money by cash , either Euros or Pounds...if I get it right? thanks.Fede

    • Geoff

Yes - cash is king in Cuba but the rate for US dollars is terrible so bring pounds or euros.

After much discussion with various adventure tour providers we have decided to go with Exodus. They can offer us a private group tour at the best time of year at a discounted rate. We even get a Saturday departure! All in all I think this is the best of the offers and Exodus have a great reputation so we can look forward to an amazing adventure holiday!

  • Geoff

I am currently in discussion with Exodus, Explore and World Expeditions t find us the best possible deal. There is a lot of information to compare and itineraries vary but all these companies have excellent reputations. We should get something confirmed within the next few days. :-)
