****IMPORTANT UPDATE ON LOCATION*** The location has been CHANGED TO RM HENDRICKS PARK due to an unforeseen problem with the Charles Pinckney site. Everything else will remain the same, only the location has changed. R.M. Hendricks Park is located on Vriginia Avenue in the[masked] block. It's very easy to get to, and is right off the I526 exit ramp for Virginia Ave. It's also right across the street from the intersection of Lincoln Ave and Virginia Ave. This is a very nice park and has an enclosed playground, shelter with several picnic tables, bathrooms, lots of green space, and plenty of parking. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and hope that everyone can still come. (updated 8/22/13)
The summer is coming to a close and school is starting back up and what better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than with ice cream! Let's meet at the beautiful and historic Charles Pinckney national park. We have the picnic tables by the shelter (near the parking lot) reserved. I'll bring chocolate and vanilla ice cream and bowls, spoons, and napkins. You bring the toppings and we'll have a sundae bar. Suggestions are cones, syrups, fruit toppings, whipped topping, cherries, nuts, sprinkles, or even other ice cream flavors. If someone could bring drinks and cups - or everyone bring their own - that would be great, too!
When is it? Sunday 8/25, from noon-2pm.
So who's invited? Everyone! Adults, kids, even dogs. Leashes are required for the 4-legged little ones, but optional for the 2-legged variety. :)
What is there to do? In a word, lots. Charles Pinckney was a principal author and a signer of the United States Constitution. This remnant of his coastal plantation is preserved to tell the story of a "forgotten founder," his life of public service, the lives of enslaved African Americans on South Carolina Lowcountry plantations and their influences on Charles Pinckney. The grounds are beautiful with walking trails as well as a visitors center. The park offers a Junior Ranger Program for kids 12yo and under, so there is something for everyone.
What's the cost? Is there a cost too high for such fun as we will have with such fun freethinking friends as will be there? I don't think so, but you'll be glad to know it is free. Zip! Nada! So show up!
