Book Group, 10/29/13

Our review of "The Righteous Mind"* was very informative. Amy did a great job of facilitating and as usual there were many interesting and knowledgeable contributions from all thirteen attendees.

If you weren't at the regular monthly meeting of the SHL at Gage Hall or Sunday's book group the following is information obtained from the Amazon book purchase site about next months selection "God and the Folly of Faith" by Victor J. Stenger.

"A thorough and hard-hitting critique that is a must read for anyone interested in the interaction between religion and science. It has become the prevalent view among sociologists, historians, and some theistic scientists that religion and science have never been in serious conflict. Some even claim that Christianity was responsible for the development of science. In a sweeping historical survey that begins with ancient Greek science and proceeds through the Renaissance and Enlightenment to contemporary advances in physics and cosmology, Stenger makes a convincing case that not only is this conclusion false, but Christianity actually held back the progress of science for one thousand years. It is significant, he notes, that the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century occurred only after the revolts against established ecclesiastic authorities in the Rena issance and Reformation opened up new avenues of thought."

Please keep in mind that when SHL members purchase from Amazon our organization benefits. As long as you mention SHL when you purchase from Amazon the SHL will receive a 15% rebate. Information about the purchase link can be found at the Home Page of the Secular Humanist of the Lowcountry.

Our meeting will be at the Sam Rittenberg Barnes and Nobel on November 24th. between the hours of 4:00 and 5:30. We will go out to eat as usual after the meeting. Early arrivals have the privilege of choosing where we go out to eat.
