Volunteer: Adopt-a-Highway Litter Pick-up

Our second SHL volunteering event of the new year is an Adopt-a-Highway Litter Pick-up on our usual stretch of Harborview Road. We have bags, gloves, orange safety vests, and long handled "picker-uppers' provided by Palmetto Pride and the SCDOT. Kids are welcome (with parents), but the traffic is fairly fast along this road so parents should use their judgment. We meet in the bank parking lot next to the Harris Teeter at 1005 Harborview road to divide up the route and distribute supplies, and pick up from Darwin Street to Fort Johnson Road, where we are recognized on an SCDOT Adopt-a-Highway sign. We usually work from 9 -11 am, but if you need to leave earlier, that's okay. Hope you can join us!

HI Laura, I know I won't be at the lunch, but I am planning to attend the litter pick up. I've been reluctant to rsvp becaue I so often am trying to fight off a migraine before I start back to work later on Saturday. So hope to see you in the AM.

Hi Laura, my head did not cooperate either, starting about 2:30 am Saturday, even missed work Sat night. Will there be another pickup next Sat then? Or another group, just not SHL?

Very sorry to hear that, Michelle. The other group will be picking up the other end of Harborview next weekend, but I'm not sure where they meet. The lunch is supposedly on for 11:30 next week also.

A big thank you to our 10 stalwart volunteers today! Roger, John, Barb, Jack, Gil, Deb, Kim, Stephanie, Rob and I picked up 12 big bags of trash despite very soggy conditions, while the crew on the other end of Harborview Rd postponed (along with the free lunch - which is now Feb 8th at The James Island Town Hall). We enjoyed a nice lunch and conversation at Smokey Oak Taproom next door afterwards anyway. Thanks again folks, and hope to see you again soon.

    SHL Litter pick-up volunteers:
We've been invited to a free lunch Saturday after our litter-pick-up by Mary Beth Berry, member of the James Island Town Council and James Island Town Council liaison to James Island Pride. They are sponsoring a Community Cleanup this Saturday also and share the duty of picking up along Harbor View. She invites anyone who joins in the clean-up to return to James Island Town Hall around 11:30 for lunch with them and their volunteers courtesy of Home Team BBQ. She says: if any of your volunteers can join us, that would be wonderful. It would probably be helpful to have some idea how many of you might be here for lunch. Just an estimate will be great. (So please RSVP if you think you will be there.) Thanks!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
