SHL is excited to be a part of the Flowertown Festival in Summerville
This as an excellent opportunity to let other like-minded people in the
area know that not only are they not alone, but that Charleston is home
to one of the most active and vibrant humanist communities in the region.
We hope to help remove the stigma of the negative stereotype
traditionally associated with atheists and atheism by demonstrating that
we, as humanists, atheists, agnostics, and others, are normal, happy,
ethical, and productive citizens, just like they are. We want to show
that we are not monsters!
We can do this by presenting a positive image of ourselves, by sharing
what we DO believe in, by showing that we have an identity of our own
(as opposed to merely a reaction to religion), but, most importantly, by
just being there.
This is where you come in!
We need people to represent the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry by
volunteering to staff our booth. If you're not able to volunteer,
please show your support by stopping by to say hi!
By showing up and taking our place, we send a clear message that we
exist and that we are a significant demographic. Humanism embraces the
philosophy that we are responsible for making the world a better place
for everyone. Each of us can embrace humanism by putting the "human" in
it. Let's put a smiling face with the name! Please consider coming
out, both literally and metaphorically, at the festival.
The festival runs Friday, 4/5, through Sunday, 4/7. We have broken the
weekend down into 4-hour shifts. Please look them over and let us know
which shift(s) you are interested in by replying to this email by Monday
evening. We'll post the finalized schedule on Tuesday.
Friday and Saturday: 8-noon, 11-3pm, 2-6pm
Sunday: 8-noon, 11-3pm, 2-5pm
We could also use some able-bodied people to help set up the tent on
Thursday as well as break it down on Sunday.
Because this is such an important opportunity to present ourselves to
the larger community, we will have mandatory volunteer orientation
sessions so that everyone knows what to expect and feels comfortable
representing SHL. We are offering 3 different days/times to accommodate
various schedules. Please note that you need only attend one session,
not all 3. They are as follows:
Saturday, 3/30, at 2pm, Northwoods Mall Food Court, North Charleston
Tuesday, 4/2, at 10am, Starbucks on International Boulevard, North
Wednesday, 4/3, at 7pm, Coastal Coffee Roasters, Summerville
So many people are waiting to see what we have to say and what we have
to offer! Thank you for being a part of what makes SHL and our region
