Sign Wave at Presidential Debate--DU Campus

  • Oct 3, 2012 · 5:00 PM

Keep updating your RSVPs to reflect your preferred corner. I have yard signs. I will be emailing you.

We need people at Colorado and Yale. We also need a few people at Alameda and Downing.

On the evening of Wednesday, October 3rd, we will be gracing the intersections around University of Denver (DU) waving Governor Gary Johnson for President signs.

###

Amy would like to:

Meet my people at Broadway Station Lightrail Stop, since they have lots of parking, to hand out signs from 5-5:30, then head down to Speakers Park (hopefully with some people in tow!) from then until  about 6:30?

###

Lily is booked for the 5:30 time slot at Speaker's Park. She will be speaking about Governor Gary Johnson. Speakers Park is located at Race and High Streets, near the  pedestrian overpass and will be open from 3-6:30. The organizer said the attendance would probably be higher after 5, closer to the debate.

Thank you Lily for speaking about our Presidential Candidate!
###

There is a group going down to Speaker's Park (area between High and Race) at 2:30p, from the Colorado RTD Station. If you are interested, email Chris G.

His profile and email link: http://www.meetup.com/lpcolorado/members/12922607/

###

Please note the 2:30pm meeting at the Colorado light rail station is for the people who want to go to the Speakers Park. There will be the campaign supplies to pass out.

It is a very strict security area so make sure you won't have anything that could be called a weapon.

Lily's speech on behalf of the Governor Johnson was scheduled for 5:30pm.

###

PARKING: I have selected intersections that should have some on street or residential parking. Use your common sense. Amy chose the Broadway Station because of the ample parking. Bring exact change for the RTD ticket machines, unless you like Sacagaweas.

We will select corners that have a combination of visibility, safety, and proximity to the event. 'Corner Captains' will be assigned to hand out yard signs and be a point of contact for the activists participating on their corner. Contact us if you would like to be a Corner Captain.

Please post on your RSVP which intersection you want to sign wave:

Broadway and Evans (Brenda)

Broadway and Mississippi/Louisiana (Brenda)

RTD Light Rail Stations to Speaker's Park (Amy)

Yale and Colorado (Frank Atwood. Beaujo's Pizza side - parking there too)

Alameda and Downing (Chris Grundemann.)

We will gather at assigned intersections at 5:00pm or later. The sun sets around 6:45pm, so we will wrap up the sign waving around that time. Safety will be our foremost concern. The debate goes live to air at 7:00pm.

-=>-=>After the sign wave we will socialize and celebrate our outreach efforts at The Barker Lounge at 475 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, 80204 (In the Santa Fe Arts District).

Please stay tuned for more information.

If Gary were to debate Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, there would be change indeed. Governor Gary Johnson was nicknamed Governor Veto for a good reason. Johnson, two term governor of New Mexico balanced the books in a state that was overextended and spending too much. Governor Johnson vetoed more legislation in his eight years as Governor of New Mexico than any other governor. He was re-elected in a state that is 2:1 Democrat to Republican. Johnson has proven he can work with both parties. Participating in the presidential debates will shake up the polls drastically.

    Hey Brenda,
In response to that guy Kris with WACC who invited us L's to the Mercury, you said that we will be meeting afterwards at the Barker Lounge. However, I clearly remember getting an email from you yesterday saying that the Barker Lounge thing had been cancelled. What gives?

It is in the body of the page ;-) Kris can create his own Meetup and promote his own event. There is a reason this Meetup has a lot of activist. I work on it. I was fine with one cross promotion, which is his RSVP. This Meetup is an Libertariran Meetup. We have a Libertarian event at the Barker Lounge tonight. Thanks for point this out Scott.

Hi Von - we are asking folks coming from the south to join Frank Atwood at Colorado and Yale. Frank will be there at 4:00pm. I will email you his phone number. From there you can get to the other spots via Yale, or head over to Speaker's Park. The DU area will be really congested, so any vehicle that has branding, might be better served driving around the campus, rather than through it. We will keep in contact with people and figure out if taking a run down Evans will be fesible. University is closed past the Magness Arena area. I will be over at Broadway and Evan, and will attempt to find out if Evan is a thoroughfare for vehicles.

I'm planning to come up from Woodland Park with two 4ft square LIVE/FREE banners . I don't know Denver , particularly the area around the University all that well . I see RTD plans to be open even at the University station . That would seem to me to be a natural starting point . Does 4:00 ( 1600 ) seem like a reasonable time to get there ? Where are roving TV crews likely to be ?

    1 · October 3, 2012

    • Amy

I do know that there is a sign/banner size restriction at Speakers Park on the DU campus itself of 22x28. I think they would be fine elsewhere! :) We are all meeting at various intersections. Choose one and run with it :D

      October 3, 2012

    • Amy

(That would be 22x28 INCHES above...)

Hi, I'm jumping in fairly late. I'd like to do something at the light rail stations (perhaps the one at DU). Feel free to contact me and let me know the best place to meet. SheilahDavis[at]hotmail.com Thanks.

Where is the best place to park for broadway/evans. Is it close to light rail?

Hi Dawn, Broadway and Evans is fairly residential on the east or west side of the intersection. I will be on the southeast corner with signs if possible. Light Rail is about a mile and a half to the north of B&Evans (1.6).

Are we not allowed to wave signs closer to the event? University and Evans seems like it would be a great spot (with the carnegie green on the SW corner, etc) - are we worried there will be too many others there or something?

I'm happy to be a "corner captain" and I already have a fair amount of materials, including yard signs, that folks can use / hand out, etc...

    October 1, 2012

    • Dawn

Thanks Brenda! Im with you. I will comply. My support for Gary is largely for the future id like to see paved for my young boys. I don't want my husband to have to explain to them why they are bailing me out of jail at midnight cuz mommas gone rogue! See you tomorrow. Any idea where to park? Or is this light rail accessible?

Sounds good - thanks for the info - I'll be at Alameda and Downing =)

      October 2, 2012

  • Amy

Yes, I will be the corner captain at Broadway Station from 5-5:30 -- then I am considering hopping on the lightrail and heading over to Speakers Park on the DU campus. If I do this, folks may choose to stay at Broadway Station to sign wave, or join me. I will be checking out Speakers Park earlier in the day to see what the environment there is like, so I will make my decision that day. Regardless, unless RTD somehow kicks me out, I will be at Broadway Station at 5pm with signs!

    October 2, 2012

  • Zach R.

Forgot to RSVP to a corner. I live on campus so the RTD would be the easiest for me.
