Light is the most important tool the photographer need. There is no photograph without light.

For most of us, the first time we've used a flashgun was a disaster, shiny skins, dark background, horrible shadows... That's why we decided to go the "available light" way. But what if you learn to use this piece of gear? What if you then carry with you everywhere? That flashgun will also become available whenever you need it: natural light is not good or too low, great background but way too bright...

This fotogym will show you how to understand flash better in order to make it your photography best friend. This introduction to off-camera flash photography will guide you, using one single flashgun, thru:

  • understanding the 3 main properties of light: colour, direction and quality
  • to get an exposure for the flash
  • balance it with the ambiance
  • how to properly bounce off the ceiling/walls for decent indoor shoot
  • how getting the flash off-camera can improve your shots
  • live demonstration starting from scratch

Program:
09:30 - 11:00 - Lecture
11:00 - 12:30 - Lunch and out for the assignment
12:30 - 14:00 - Assignment photo review

The assignment requires the use of a proper flashgun but owning an off-camera triggering is not required but helpful.

For those who wish to buy an off-camera triggering system to start with:

This event will be running at a new time and new venue. The beautiful Tabernacle in Notting Hill has an amazing theatre that holds up to 230 people seated. The seating is graded so everyone will have a good view of the event. We'll start slightly earlier with an optional 9-9.30 for coffee and something to eat and a 9.30am kick off. As the Tab has other events running in the theatre we need to vacate by 2pm but with Portobello Road just around the corner we're not at a loss for places to eat and drink. For pictures and info on the Tabernacle look here: www.tabernaclelive.co.uk/spaceforhire.php

Many many thanks for an excellent day! Made off camera flash really easy to understand and the presenters were very friendly and informative. I would love a follow on from this meetup to consolidate all we have learned and take us on to more challenging light techniques.

I just wanted to say thank you, I've had an SB800 a year but never used it because the results were disappointing and at £300 it's a lot of money to be left in your camera bag, now since your easy to understand workshop, it has helped me understand how to use my flash unit to it's potential, now I'm looking at buying another one so I can utilise the CLS on my Nikon. I like the DIY tips also. Nice group of people, it was great to interact with you. Looking forward to the next group meet. Buzz

This was my first meet up and I really enjoyed myself! Like Gill, I learnt more from this than I had from all the books I've bought too!

    Assistant Organizer
Whenever you use a new venue you can guarantee something unexpected happen that you don't plan for. But now we know where the bugs are we have scheduled a meeting with the Tab to sort them out next week. I'm very glad they didn't over shadow the day and everyone enjoyed Huy's presentation. Thanks for your patience.

I have been ploughing my way through a couple of different books about flash (and getting very confused!). I learnt more from this presentation than I probably would have done from 10 books, I thought it was absolutely outstanding, thanks.

This seminar was a very good introduction to flash photography and make it look very easy for people to understand. His knowledge of flash is very good and the people that attended were very friendly. The only thing that was bad and i mean bad was the dinning area as the staff behind the counter were not very polite. This was felt by not just me but a few other people as well, please correct me if i am wrong. Well done to the organizers of this event and would like to say a very big thank you.

Really interesting and enjoyable - worth getting out early for on a Saturday morning! As somebody else mentioned - clip-on microphones would be really useful for future sessions.

    •  Thought the meeting was absolutely outstanding. Very well organized, kept on schedule, learned a great deal and it delivered what it said it was going to - an introduction to off-camera flash. Would have been nice to have some more time to interact with the instructors and see their equipment, but overall a great day.
    •  Great session which will stop me putting my flash on eBay -- the three presenters were infectiously enthusiastic, and I look forward to experimenting more with off-camera flash. Great venue too, although it would be good to use radio mics if possible next time.

Once again, Huy and his team bring a difficult and much much misunderstood subject to life with an easy to follow tutorial with demonstrations of various techniques that can be employed to bring flash photography to life. This is the third time I've seen Huy, Paoulo and Rams in action and I'll be there again if they can be persuaded to do a gig for the LPMG again in the future. Every time I see them they get better and I still manage to gain a better insight into this fascinating aspect of photography.
    •  First one I attended. Excellent live demos.
    •  I have been seriously involved in photography for the last 5 years. The only time I used flash was when I needed a bit of fill-in, just to boost details in the shadows and brighten the eyes in portraits.. As a result of Huyi's talk yesterday, it was a pleasant revelation to discover the potential of flash photography. The seminar spearheaded by Huyi and strongly supported by his 2 aides was positively enlightening. They crammed in information about this subject in 1.5 hours what I would have learned from a 300 page book in 3 months. I never knew that, in pure flash photography, the varied use of shutter speeds controlled the background and the use of aperture; the quality of detail in the foreground. This talk was all about super Light with the creative use of flash. And the motivating critique in the second half was an added dividend. Of course this is not enough. To improve our technique in the effective use 0f flash, one-on- one workshops will help a lot. Well done Guys.
    •  A really interesting & helpful talk. The practical demonstrations between slides made use of flash look both fun & easy! The new venue at the Tabernacle does wonders for the presentation too.
    •  I wish they had a clip on microphone each, like they do in tv studios, though I highly rate the seminar
    •  Very good, helpfull advise, giving many pointers for advancing practical use of the use of flash. Paolo's advice and money saving tips were excellent and I will be contacting him for further advice.
    •  Great venue and vibe to the whole day - thanks to Alex & everyone who helped organise. Paulo, Rams, Hug, your enthusiasm & knowledge are infectious! I learned sooooo much - my 430 EXII is definately making a more regular appearance from my kit bag. Membership of the group are so genuine. Practiced some of the tips the whole afternoon / evening and had a thoroughly pleasant day. It may have been the best of the summer packed into 1 single day!
    •  Thanks Huy, Paulo and Rams for an excellent show. Even though I've seen your gig on a couple of occasions - again I learnt something new and exciting from you guys and I love that! Fantastic day, thank you.
    •  Was good to see the pratical flash demonstrations rather than just theory - thanks very much.
    •  Really enjoyed the session and learnt a few new things. Its all I ask for really.
    •  learned loads, the guys all did a great job.
    •  fantasic. Really learnt so much and had a practise too which was most useful
    •  I just wanted to say thank you Tom, Alex, Huy and the team, for your Introduction to off-camera flash photography at the LPMG, held in Westbourne Park yesterday, I have been playing around with my SB800 today, I've had it a year but never used it because the results were disappointing and at £300 it's a lot of money to be left in your camera bag, now since your easy to understand workshop, it has helped me understand how to use my flash unit to it's potential, now I'm looking at buying another one so I can utilise the CLS on my Nikon. and you DIY kit was usefull now I'm looking for black straws. The way we had the morning lecture then went out and practiced what you said, they came back into the theatre and finished off the workshop with a critique of images we took was great. Looking forward to the next group meet with you. Regards Mark Wilson Nikon D90
    •  Bit chaotic at some points, overall good! Also Huy was't talking to the microphone and he was sometimes very hard to hear.
    •  This was an excellent introduction. Huy and Paoulo are really friendly, down to earth and extremely knowledgeable people. I have been reading up on off camera flash in bookd and on Strobist (which is also excellent!) but these guys made it all so very easy to understand. Thanks a million and do let me know if they are planning to do more seminars.
    •  good stuff
