> Gallery Talk > Allentown Art Museum > Lunch > Allentown Brew Works

Please join us for a creative, educational and fun-filled Gallery Talk followed by a late lunch at the nearby Allentown Brew Works. We currently have about a half dozen people from various inter-related Meetup groups planning to attend! The Museum staff is working with PhotoQuest101 to produce a special Photography Meetup event for us - A Day at the Museum, (details to follow as they develop).

As an informative preview, we will meet with John Pepper, Adult Programs Coordinator, on Wednesday, November 4 at noon to enjoy his Gallery Talk on the famed Kress Collection. This casual talk runs approximately 45 minutes, unless otherwise noted, and is free with museum admission.

With its collection of over 13,000 works of art, the Allentown Art Museum is a major regional art institution. The gallery in collaboration with Lehigh and Lafayette Universities is also showcasing powerful examples of contemporary photography in the Rodale Gallery with a special exhibition titled New Visions: Black and White Photography in Contemporary Art.

This Museum Meetup will be a valuable preview of the Allentown Art Museum, to inspire creative ideas for our upcoming PhotoQuest101 event at the museum, which will include opportunities to photograph male and female models assuming creative poses in the impressive environments of museum, > Gallery Talk > Allentown Art Museum > Lunch > Allentown Brew Works

Join John Pepper, adjunct professor of art history, Lehigh Carbon Community College From Wikipedia - for insightful gallery talks related to The Kress Collection. There is NO Meetup fee for this event, but you must pay for your Museum admission and of course your lunch, afterwards. (Museum members are free, $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens (60+) and students (with valid ID).

While this is not, per se, a Photo Quest or a Photo Session, feel free to bring your cameras, but remember, not all artworks may be photographed due to copyright or flash issues. Be prepared to learn and obey museum rules about copyright and flash restrictions!

In 1959, a gift of fifty-three Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures from Samuel H. Kress (a native of nearby Cherryville, Pennsylvania) brought the museum to a new level. The Kress gift stimulated community visionaries and museum friends to purchase and refurbish a building, formerly the First Presbyterian Church (originally built 1902), suitable to house the new collection. In 1975, an Edgar Tafel-designed expansion to the building was completed to enhance the museum's programs and collecting plans. At that time, the Museum installed a room designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as part of its permanent collection: the library from the second Francis W. Little House. Another room from that house can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Stop in at noon to the City View Diner, at Grape and MacArthur in Whitehall, and say, "Hello!" to your other area writers. We do NOT have a Featured Presenter of Guest Speaker for these Saturday Brunches--YOU'RE IT! Plan to Ask! Plan to Tell! Plan to Listen! Plan to Chatter!

We're NOT all in the same boat together! The fact is we're all in very separate, very different boats! That's why it helps to have someone else point out the rocks and the rapids!

Share some quality time together with other accomplished and aspiring writers. Be a part of your profession! Share a meal; share a snack; share some conversation; share some ideas or information; share a laugh! There's plenty to go around.

We'll make it easy! Have some hot chocolate with whipped cream, steaming coffee, a cold beer or a creamy old-fashioned milk-shake. Order a big breakfast, a hot lunch, a cold salad or a bowl of home-made soup. Sleep late! Stop at noon and throw some fuel on the fire.

Bring copies of your latest manuscript; your published books or some promotional material. Bring something you've read that has helped you or something you didn't quite get or something you'd like to share and get opinions on.

This brunch is an informal social occasion; a great opportunity to read, share, critique, chat, learn and network. You'll make new friends, discover exciting new ideas; broaden your horizons and develop some plans to help you ratchet your writing (and marketing) skills up a few notches.

Directions:
From Rte 22:

Exit at Rte 145 N (Macarthur Rd) toward the malls.

Keep to the right lanes, but not far right at first or you'll be forced into the Lehigh Valley Mall.

Immediately after the mall entrance get in the far right lane and you will be able to see the diner on the top of the hill before the traffic signal at Grape St. You can enter the diner before the light, or if you miss it, just turn right onto Grape St, then a quick right into the diner parking lot.

See you there!

Cloud Busting Part VI – Pitch It or Toss It Presented by Author Jack Hillman

Jack Hillman isn't just a published writer with a popular young adult science fiction/fantasy trilogy to his credit. Jack isn't just a writer who wrote over 2500 non-fiction articles over the past two decades. Jack Hillman has also written medical articles based on his background as a clinical psychologist specializing in abnormal psychology.

And, to those who know him (and to those who take pains to avoid him), Jack Hillman has made a study of ancient and modern weapons of martial arts, particularly those with long, sharp blades.

Beyond all that, in order to make his writing worthwhile, fruitful and perhaps most important, profitable, Jack has made a long-term, comprehensive study and analysis of the ins and outs; the ups and downs, the practical process and procedures of dealing with agents, editors, critique groups, writers groups, associations and the publishing industry in general. Oh yeah, and Norse mythology.

Whether you and your book are ready for Good Morning America, Fresh Air or the Colbert Report—or not—you will definitely want to be primed, prepped and fully prepared with Jack Hillman’s no-nonsense, tried and true information on when and how to successfully pitch your story to an agent.

Join the Lehigh Valley Writer's Symposium for clear cut answers to questions like:

What must I do to prepare my idea, outline, story, manuscript for publication? What must I know before contacting an agent? What is the best way to present myself to an agent? How can I approach an agent without feeling totally powerless? What kind of contracts should I expect to sign?

Do I need an agent? Why do I need an agent? What can an agent do for me that I can’t do for myself? Can I submit my manuscript or outline directly to a publisher? When should I seek out an agent? Are all agents created equal? What kind of agents are there? should I look for? do I need? Can having an agent be a liability rather than an asset?

And that is just the tip of the iceberg of what you can expect in this action-packed episode of Cloud Busting VI – Pitch It or Toss It!
Also, for your fun and enjoyment:
Don’t give away that secret novel that’s been simmering inside you for so long, but do come up with something clever that you can pitch to our imaginary friend and Creative Production Manager of Magna Royalty Films, Nona Sequitah.

Let’s pretend that you are delivering the catered lunch for the Creative Production Team Meeting of Magna Royalty Films. It’s dress down Friday. It’s the weekend. It’s lunchtime. They’re all feeing goood! Most everyone has already had a few too many martinis, or whatever it is the Creative Production Team drinks nowadays.

The only one who isn’t dressed down or half baked is the very angry woman at the head of the long table. She’s wearing a slick tailored black pin-striped suit, has slicked black hair and a slick black laptop in the table in front of her.

She yells out to her team, “If you jerks don’t come up with some dynamite—and I mean DY-NA-MITE —ideas for the 2010 fall production schedule, I’ll have every one of you replaced by monkeys on Monday and your heads turned into votive lamps for your graves!”

Then her eyes glow, burn and penetrate right into your face and she mockingly says, “Why, I’ll bet this freaking delivery person has better ideas than any one of YOU! Am I right, Dahling? I’ll bet you have a great idea for our next blockbuster movie somewhere in that pretty little head of yours, AM I RIGHT? I'M ALWAYS RIGHT! Talk to me! Give me some fresh ideas from somewhere besides this god-forsaken boardroom! Can't you see I'm desperate! Give me something good and I will personally see that it gets to the top!”

Aha! Remember that book you’ve been working on? You're breaking out in a cold sweat. You never were good in front of a group. But this could be Your Make-it Moment. You have 30 seconds. Can you PITCH IT? Or are you going to TOSS IT? What are you going to say? Have you prepared for this moment?
Join us for a workshop that will help you polish—and deliver—your pitch. Let’s not forget the delivery. You may have the perfect 30 second pitch, but if you forget key points, or cough, mumble and stammer, you may as well TOSS IT!

Click to join the fun on Monday, June 15th at 6:00 pm in the Private Conference Room downstairs at the Allentown Public Library. If you don’t know where that is—shame on you!

Cost: $3.50

Jerry Waxler, M.A., author of The 4 Elements for Writers, returns to the podium with Cloud Busting strategies to clarify the difficult dimensions of planning, plotting and pacing your fiction, non-fiction or memoir based work.

In previous Cloud Busting Workshops, we have learned to acquire a wealth of brilliant ideas, to pen gripping and meaningful dialog, to write clever descriptions, create memorable characters and uncover intense conflicts. After all that, we might as well toss it into the blender and make a murky soup of it without the critical elements of pacing and plot.

Plotting is the architecture and trajectory in which we place our characters to give the story context and continuity. It wraps and ties all of the other elements into some logical package which doesn't lead, but compels the reader, scene to scene, from premise to conclusion.

Join us for this insightful workshop in the Conference Room at the Allentown Public Library on Monday, May 11 at 6:00 pm. Due to seating, attendance is strictly limited. Please RSVP to reserve your place today.
