ExpressionEngine Content Management System (CMS) Demo + Prizes

  • Aug 6, 2012 · 6:00 PM

[Important note: this meetup is hosted at MATC downtown campus, room 240. Parking and directions:]

In August, yours truly will present on ExpressionEngine Content Management System (CMS). This is a joint meetup with the Madison Software Developers Meetup and the Madison PHP Meetup.

For the tech-heads:

ExpressionEngine is a LAMP-stack, open-architecture CMS built on the CodeIgniter framework.

For the more design-centric:

Powerful, flexible and easy-to-learn, ExpressionEngine was built for web designers who don't care to write PHP or wade through core files (although you can if you like).

What we'll cover:

  • What is a CMS? Can't I just use Dreamweaver?
  • What about Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla and DotNetJavaRailsPageBlasterQuickCMS123? A comparison.
  • Hosting requirements. desktop tools
  • Fields, categories, entries and templates: put 'em together and you've got a web site
  • Build a blog framework in 20 minutes
  • Make it do what I want! Add-ons
  • Best practices
  • Major Rad Giveaway! Win a copy of ExpressionEngine CMS or an e-book!

Helpful exposure to a CMS I was not familiar with. Good sense of community. Knowledgeable speaker, helpful with answering questions and providing availability beyond session. Prizes were a pleasant extra.
    Would attend again. Thank you.

Great presentation, even the miscues were informative thanks to knowledgeable attendees. Thanks Ben.

I didn't really understand a lot of what was going on. Didn't follow the way separation of display and content worked. I see how WordPress and Drupal take some work to get the look like you want it but didn't follow how that was done in EE. It takes me a while to grasp these things. Perhaps it went a little fast for me.

Interesting presentation, good overview of the product that enabled me to draw comparisons on my own with the various CMS tools I use.

I liked seeing something actually done in EE. I would have liked to see more on how it handles rebuilding navigation and managing assets; editing and publishing a page is the easy part. But I learned a lot more in an hour from Ben than I could have learned on my own.

I don't know if we'll have video, but I can share the slides when it's over.
