Why is Magesongs School Of Songwriting different?
"There is no school for songwriters except the school of hard knocks and that school is filled with lies, myths, half-truths, and misinformation. I hear it everyday. Some of these myths have been around for over 50 years. Talented, you may well be. Educated about your chosen career--doubtful." -
Dude McLean. (Producer and music publisher with credits on so many artists including Oak Ridge Boys, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Dr.Hook, Cher, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Air Supply, Duke Ellington, Abba, Emmy Lou Harris, Buddy Holly, Lionel Ritchie, Dirty Dancing, Evita, Stephanie Mills, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Whitney Houston...)
That is why Magesongs School of Songwriting (MSOS) exist. Dude believes as we do that there are outstanding talents out(here) that unfortunately do not understand the concept of marketable songwriting which obviously includes business side of being a songwriter. They get taken advantage of having to pay lots of money which might get them a certificate, but watch their songs in competitions, pitched to music publishers and record labels and you'll get the idea. Songwriting can be more than just a hobby to you if you are committed to learn the talents of the masters before us. It will mean a lot more to you and will make more 'cents' when your performing right society (i.e. APRA in Australia, BMI, ASCAP or SESAC in USA, or PRS in UK) sends you a cheque in the mail for your song being played on the radio or having been used by another performer whom you or your music publisher have given permission to.
Therefore we at MSOS offer a unique and valuable course for people wanting to learn not only the techniques commonly used by successful songwriters, but also everything you need to know about the music industry relating to professional songwriting. This course suits singers wanting to add songwriting to their career, singer-songwriters, lyricists, composers, musicians, producers and song programmers, indeed anyone who is interested in learning how to create songs that generate income.
If you have attended another songwriting course before and if it made no difference with your songwriting; if your songs aren't getting the interest of music publishers or you aren't receiving any positive feedback from record labels about your songs; or if you have even tried songwriting competitions and haven't won any awards for your craft, then I'd like to help you achieve these.
Here at MSOS students have had their course songs speaking for themselves by winning songwriting contests and songwriters awards and getting songs on hold by record companies. John Salter has a song on hold for Robbie Williams; Karen Guymer had a song on hold by Sony (Nashville) for 6 months for Sarah Evans and other artists; Karen Guymer also went on winning the Rudy Brandsma Award 2010; I myself have a release on Joe Dolce (Shaddap You Face) album 'The Wind Cries Mary' in 2008 and songs written in french for U.S. hip-hop sensation, Christelle which includes a collaboration with Grammy Award winner songwriter Diane Warren for her song No Known Cure; plus many of my students, Jazmine Borella, Jimmy Fong, Karen Freedman amongst many others making the Top 25 of the Australian Songwriting Contest if not the Top 10 and more recently Rick Hart being the winner of the Australian Songwriters Association 2012 Award for best ballad. Many of our students haven't had any song written prior from doing this course and some only writing poems while others having had a try at a couple of songs which they knew would not get them anywhere.
You could attend one of our classes now offered via Live Web-Conferencing for free if there's one currently running and decide for yourself if this is the right course for you.
If you do not live near Melbourne, in fact if you even live overseas, our course has extended its wings to cater for students from around the globe, with an internet connection and a computer. You pay for the course and not for using the Web-Conferencing website. Please visit the Web-Conferencing Classroom, I'm sure you've never seen anything like it. You cannot see some features unless a moderator is in the room and gives you access to them, but you get an idea of what it looks like. The password access is 'bsharp'.
Note: We do not call it an online course but Live Web-Conferencing. With online courses, you are generally speaking to a computer where you only read stereotyped materials and answer the questions. There is no one on the other end to care for your needs. At MSOS you are connected live to your teacher in each class session like in a physical room. In fact it technology makes it more exciting than being in a physical room.

"This course has been fantastic for me, as a performer and songwriter I have learnt so much about not only succesful song structures but also the business side of the music industry. Highly recommend to all."
Karen Guymer (Bentleigh East). PubliCourse song now published. Winner of Rudy Brandsma Award 2010, 2nd prize winner of Open category 2012, plus multiple other Top 10 awards in other categories in 2008, 2010 & 2012 at the Australian Songwriters Association Awards.
"Hi Jacques, I just wanted to say Thank You so much for a wonderful course. I must admit when I signed up for the course I wasn't sure what to expect but it exceeded all my expectations. A big thumbs up to the material covered, but also to yourself for the way you made it all so interesting and also showed great faith and belief in myself and my songwriting. As I have told you before, the creative process has always been the thing that interests me most. Watching a song take shape and come together is something that continues to inspire me to write. However, now I have so many more great tips, tricks and tools at my disposal (thanks to the course). I look forward to growing and developing my craft as a songwriter. I know it will be a hard slog but it is what I want to do so I have to just keep at it. The course has really re-kindled my love of writing and I thank you for this too. It's the business side that scares me most but even here I know if I believe in myself and my songs then I cannot accept "NO" for an answer. I hope we can stay in touch and that you wouldn't mind me sending you songs (from time to time) to have a look at.
I really respect what you have to say as I know it is intended to get me to push myself to be the best I can at my craft. Once again, a truly great course and I will sing your praises loudly.
Rick Hart (Rowville, Victoria) 1st Prize Winner of the Australian Songwriters Association 2012 Award (Best Ballad)
"I enjoyed every moment of your course and I'm sad it's over. It was extremely professional. Your dedication and passion was an inspiration in itself. Now I feel excited and confident stepping into the songwriting business"
