May Permablitz!

  • Jun 1, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Liz Newman's house

Join us for the first permablitz of the season on May 25 at the home of meetup member Liz Newman and family from 9:00am - 4:30pm!

Permablitzes are day-long work parties that put permaculture design into action! Imagine more than twenty permaculture folks working side-by-side for six hours resulting in more than 180 labor hours completed in one day, great fun, conversation, and camaraderie as well as experiential learning for all!

Liz and her family have been active members of our permaculture community for several years, volunteering for work parties and permablitzes while learning along the way.  Theirs is a good example of a Portland neighborhood lot with all the normal "design constraints" you would expect, but also loads of opportunity thanks to permaculture design.

Click here to learn more about permablitzing.

This is part of a series of permablitzes in and around Portland in 2013.  Taking part in these events is one of the best ways to "put your name in the hat" for permablitzes at your own place in the future!

Work projects and teams to be announced based on the permaculture design for this site, but here's a preliminary agenda for planning purposes.

  • 9:00 Gather for coffee/tea (provided), introductions and a briefing on the plan for the day
  • 9:30 Review of Permaculture Design Principles and the design elements for this property
  • 10:00 Break into teams and work on projects
  • 12:30 Potluck Lunch (vegetarian main dish provided by host; bring something to compliment)
  • 1:00 Resume work
  • 3:30 Check-in & prioritize final hour / clean-up

What to bring:

notebook/camera, work gloves, boots, Clothes that can get a bit dirty (and dress in layers for varying temperatures through the course of the day), Potluck dish to share and “kit” (dish/bowl/utensils/napkins), water bottle, sunscreen

    (Part 2:)
The little round tomato planters are now set up with their tomatoes along the fence, and the storm is doing the watering work for us right now. In the next few days I hope to put down more chips, and get the grapes planted and the ornamentals they displace transplanted. In a couple of weeks, the dying Norway maple on the corner comes down and a fruit tree (TBD--suggestions welcome) will replace it. And, maybe even this month, 2-3 more trees (nuts?) will go into the parkway/esplanade/verge, or whatever you call it (you say tom ah to). We hope you'll be back in the fall to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of our labors. Stop by any time to check out progress. Meanwhile, JF posted throughout the permablitz on Facebook; you can see his entries at www.facebook.com/jean.f.cloutier

    Many, many thanks--Liz and family

Wow--You guys are the best! I wish there were a six star rating...

Lisa, Dave, Heather, Rachel, Jon, and everyone else--You have been so generous with your wisdom, your tools, your time, your know-how, your food and fun and kids.

We finished cleaning up no problem last night (thank you) and spent the evening and today basking in our transformed garden. I woke up at 5:30 so happy, and excited at all the little plants now in our care-couldn't wait to go out and check it out all over again-and water. It looks GREAT!!!! Neighbors have been by already, admiring, asking questions.. (see part 2...)

    Hi, all--
Thanks so much for coming to our permablitz! We're excited.
A couple of housekeeping notes--our front door is on Sawyer Street (Portland not South Portland!) but our driveway is on Bryant Street. The driveway on Sawyer belongs to the neighbors! You may want to drop materials off on Bryant at the driveway; please park close to the curb but not close to the driveway (narrow street!) or on Sawyer.

    See you in the am!

We have a dog run in the back that might well have the gate open while people are working...we can probably get my son and some kids to walk them around the block to the park, etc.

I'd love to, but the postponement conflicts with the national day of civic hacking... Count me in next time!

Hi. I am brand new to this group but would like to join the permablitz on the 25th. It sounds like it would be fun and a great way to jump right in and learn. Another plus it is only a few blocks from my house. I too would bring my 9 year old daughter, if that is acceptable and hope to talk my husband into joining us as well.
