No Impact Experiment OCT 13th ~ 20th 2013

  • Oct 13, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Let's discover more ways to live that are better for both people and the planet together!

The No Impact Experiment is a one-week carbon cleanse. It is a chance for you to see if you to make a difference to your quality of life. It’s not about giving up creature comforts but an opportunity for you to test whether the modern “conveniences” you take for granted are actually making you happier or just eating away at your time and money. It is a call to action to stretch a little further into a no-impact lifestyle together.

Members of our community from Portland have initiated a No Impact Week that will take place on October 13th-20th, 2013. Register here to join in!

This experiment was inspired by Colin Beavan’s one year experiment with No Impact living in New York City.  The No Impact Experiment is an eight day version of Colin and his family’s year long experiment. Each day of the program has its own theme and challenge that builds on the next so that by the end of the week you are virtually living No Impact. The daily challenges are as follows:

Sunday: Consumption ~ Don’t buy anything new (except for food!)

Monday: Trash ~ Don’t create any trash.

Tuesday: Transportation ~ Only transport yourself through environmentally friendly ways such as biking, walking, public transportation or carpooling.

Wednesday: Food ~ Only eat local food and cut down on your meat consumption.

Thursday: Electricity ~ Cut back on your electricity use or stop it all together.

Friday: Water ~ Cut back on your water use.

Saturday: Giving Back ~ Give back to your community.

Sunday: Eco-Sabbath ~ Unplug and reflect. You and the environment take a break.

    Hi Carol,
Not sure if you were planning a physical gathering to kick things off? I challenge everyone to enlist a buddy, outside of immediate family already co-opted, to share this experience with. You can support and nudge each other. and Spread the word.

This is a no-pressure, completely self-regulated type of experiment. For some people, No Impact Week will be a hardcore event with no cars or electricity. For others it will mean carrying a mason jar so they don't have to use disposable cups/bottles. No one will be checking up on you!
