Portland Trading Post Monthly Swap & Skill-Share (Herbal Vinegars)

Please join us for the return of our "Portland Trading Post" Monthly Swap event, building on the success of our plant and preserved food swaps that have been happening since 2009!  And now you can mark your calendars for the last Sunday of every month.

It's December!  Time to hoe out your place and all those "useful" gifts you received;)  Swap or gift anything and everything this month!  Books, music, clothes, toys, tools, canned goods, teas/tinctures/herbal preparations you've made, produce, hand-made goods, etc.

December's Trading Post Skill-share is brought to us by member, herbalist and PDC grad Cathleen Miller!  "Can a simple herbal vinegar prevent the plague? Legend has it that it can. Though we won't make any guarantees that you will avoid winter plagues, herbal vinegars can be used to keep us healthy throughout the year using common ingredients.  Learn about the nutritive power of herbal vinegars, and get some ideas for your own creative renditions of old recipes."

Trading Post events are free, open to all and have minimal rules. Space may be limited so please take your RSVP seriously. Canned goods, plants, seedlings, seeds, preserved or fresh produce, hand-made items, etc. are all welcome at Portland Trading Post.  You can also bring books and clothes.

NEW! We are now combining these swaps with skill-sharing!

The main idea is that we are stepping outside of the cash economy and mutually "gifting" things to each other in a way that turns whatever we have in abundance into a diversity of goodness and good will.

In the past, people have used the "comments" area of this page to talk about what they think they might be bringing which drums up early interest:)

The only guidelines are:

No cash changes hands.

Don't start the swapping until everyone's there and has a chance to look around at what's on offer (about 15 minutes in).

You can swap with someone or simply "gift" things to each other without taking a return item. Your choice.

You can use and trade "time dollars" if you are a member of the local time bank (Hour Exchange Portland).

Make sure you've found a home for all your stuff before you leave (or take home what hasn't been gifted).

If you bring a food item with multiple ingredients, pls label. Please use the comments area of this page to talk about what you might be bringing or seeking.

This is a social and casual event.  Family and kid-friendly.  Coffee and tea provided by The Resilience Hub.  If you'd like to bring a snack or sample to share, that's great.  If you'd like to offer a short skill-share on something you like to do, that would be awesome as well....just email the organizer in advance.  If you have flyers or info about other cool things happening around town, bring those for our bulletin boards.  Bring business cards to post on our Friends & Members Enterprise Zone wall, too.

See you at the swap!

Great swap - herbal healing salve, hemp scrubbies, appliances for the office, baked goodies and more were included in my take-home loot! I'm bringing more stuff next time:)

It's always great to see everyone! I came away with some great swaps, and learned how easy herbal vinegar actually is. I had never know it's actually nutritious!

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
