Permablitz at Hazel and Nick's!

Come out to Hazel Onsrud and Nick Beaman's house for the July permablitz!

Permablitzes are day-long work parties that put permaculture design into action. Imagine more than twenty permaculture folks working side-by-side for six hours resulting in more than 180 labor hours completed in one day, great fun, conversation, and camaraderie as well as experiential learning for all!

A bit about our hosts: Nick and Hazel moved into this property last fall and have been busy converting it from a busy rental into a small home. Hazel has known about permaculture since she grew up in Maine decades ago, but she's recently become more involved with the local crew under that label because she thinks they're awful good folks. Both Nick and Hazel have been working hard to clean the inside of their new home over the winter, cultivating plants and looking into more sustainable heating sources, but the outside landscape has remained largely untouched until now. The plan focuses on maximizing our small space to manage water and produce lots of organic food all year long. These goals necessitate strategies such as move-able vertical gardening and the use of many native plants. They're hoping to use a lot of best practices in this blitz (worm factories, rain barrels, bug hotels, sheet mulching etc.), but also import a bit more of a geometric, Islamic-inspired aesthetic for the permeable patio areas. They're thrilled to be a part of this community can't wait to work with you on many projects to come.

Some teasers for this blitz include: Bokashi compost (look that one up!), creative vertical gardening, and an inoculated mushroom wall!

This is the third in a series of permablitzes in and around Portland in 2014. We intend to complete blitzes on 8 residential properties and 3 community properties this summer and fall. Taking part in these events is one of the best ways to "put your name in the hat" for permablitzes at your own place in the future!

Work projects and teams to be announced based on the permaculture design for this site, but here's a preliminary agenda for planning purposes.

9:00 Gather for coffee/tea (provided), introductions and a briefing on the plan for the day
9:30 Review of Permaculture Design Principles and the design elements for this property
10:00 Break into teams and work on projects
12:30 Potluck Lunch (vegetarian main dish provided by host; bring something to compliment)
1:00 Resume work
3:30 Check-in & prioritize final hour / clean-up

What to bring:

notebook/camera, work gloves, boots, clothes that can get a bit dirty (and dress in layers for varying temperatures through the course of the day), potluck dish to share and “kit” (dish/bowl/utensils/napkins), water bottle, sunscreen, etc.

Howdy all! I've just uploaded some photos of the event ...before and after and will add more of some of our other projects later this weekend :) Again, thank you all! We could have never done this on our own at this time... and now there are bogs where there are supposed to be bogs and growing areas where there is sun! AMAZING!

I've also added some lessons learned and sources to a spreadsheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PNlx0NVrgBXQdlOvSYgUNY679_R7N-YGWT3a-Ioy7NM/edit#gid=0

Finally, if you enjoyed this blitz you may want to consider donating to help us all create a tool lending library in Portland. Imagine if you could check out the mushroom inoculation supplies? You can't get that stuff from conventional renting places. We need 13000 by August 15th, and we really can reach that goal if everyone who cares donates a little bit. THANK YOU ALL!!!!! We still can't quite believe the transformation that took place. I will follow-up with documentation on sources etc. In the meantime, we have a cloth dog bowl, a reusable plastic mug, left unclaimed. Drop on by to pick them up, or let me know where to bring them. :)

Looking forward to seeing you all! A note about parking: you can't park on Ocean Ave but there are tons of side streets with ample parking. Feel free to pull up and unload any materials and then we can direct you to some of our favorites.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
