Tree Crops for Maine + Apple ID Session with John Bunker

  • October 16, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us for a potluck supper and to welcome our special guest speaker John Bunker of Palermo Maine.  Many of you will recognize John as the "voice" of the FEDCO Tree catalog, the author of "Not Far From the Trees: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo Maine[masked]," or the magical man who shows up at the FEDCO booth at the Common Ground Fair to help identify apple varieties both common and rare.

This evening we will hear a bit from John about his thoughts on "woody agriculture" (i.e. producing food crops from trees and shrubs, near and dear to many permaculturist hearts) and then John will help identify all those old apples from favorite neighborhood trees about which you've been wondering.  Make sure to harvest and bring some apples from your neighborhod, even if you think you already know what they are!  John is a generous treasure trove of knowledge and stories about the varieties of apples that grow in Maine.

  • 6:30 Potluck Supper (bring a dish or beverage to share and your own potluck kit)
  • 7:00 Announcements and Presentation
  • 8:00-8:30 Discussion and Closing

A transcript of John's talk at the fair a few year's ago.  Good background.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
