An important film, even an urgent one, Irene Salina's documentary probes an impending crisis. All over the globe we are privatizing water, polluting water, running out of water. Much of the world has no access to water that is clean. Companies are extracting water without paying for it and selling it back to us. And though it may not seem so, so close to Sebago, the planet is just plain running out of it. A 400 billion dollar industry, it is the third largest after electricity and oil. Blood from a slaughterhouse runs into a river, turning it red; garbage flows freely, along with pesticides and rocket fuel. Plastic bottles are clogging the environment and contain water that is less regulated and often less pure than what flows from our kitchen faucet. "The inconvenient truth at the center of 'Flow,' " wrote 'Slant' magazine, "is that while the oil crisis is intensely debated, disasters involving an even more essential fluid go perilously unnoticed." Note: A panel of experts will answer questions after the 7 o'clock show on Saturday.
