BarnFest II - Fall Ukulele Festival!

  • November 3, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • The Barn

Join us for a fun time at our 2nd annual BarnFest at of course, The Barn in Horsham. This is sure to be a great day. We will begin at 1:00, with a Jam Session with our new songbook "Philly Main Line Uke Greatest Hits Volume 2" (coming soon). At 3:30 we will begin our Pot Luck Dinner. (Everyone brings a favorite dish or dessert to share. For those who aren’t cooking, you can ask us for suggestions of what supplies are needed from the store.) Also, bring beer or your favorite cocktails. During our dinner or after we can try some Open Mike for those individuals or small groups that want to perform.

We had a great time at both our Spring and Fall 2012 BarnFest's, so here's our chance to do it again this fall! The weather will be cool and crisp but we will warm up from the great company and the strumming of the Ukes! Let's make this the best Jam Session yet!

More information and a songbook to follow in a few days.  To all of you that have never made one of our Jam Sessions, this would be the ideal setting for you to join us......All skill levels welcome!!!

Just thinking out loud. The food was delicious. Are you supposed to gain weight at a UKe Fest?
When we started playing it seemed we were going very fast, like String Band pace, but when we slowed down a bit everyone was able to keep up and I thought we sounded terrific. When we have a lot of folks with mixed levels of experience we have to keep that in mind.
Great fun. I hope everyone can come to our next one.

I really understand the need to go a bit slower and to be aware of the beat of a piece. When folks are really focused on the paper and what they are doing, it is easy to lose the beat, and then small groups start to speed up or slow down. Establishing a strong count would be helpful, and practicing with a metronome can be very useful. Thanks for thinking about this gang....

I think Foley and the rest of the gang did a nice job of leading each song with such a large group as well as volume & diversity of music. Starting a group is difficult. I am sure there are many dissertations on the topic. The key is to establish a strong beat before the song begins. Conductors usually show 1-2 beats before the ensemble starts a piece. We did the best when people counted or strummed the beat before we began. The tricky part is counting correctly to accommodate for the pick-up. We were mostly getting hung up on songs that have a few beats before the downbeat or 1. If you noticed some of the songs did tell you how to count the song in. I think if we counted/strummed the song in more consistently we would have more success.

The food and the music were great! It was a peak experience for me, with all the friends and players gathered together.
I agree with Bob that it was much easier and fun to play when we established a slightly slower pace. Maybe the metronome app that Michelle suggested would help us? Or maybe just being clear when we start the song (together hopefully) what the pace of the song will be? I loved it when Peggy danced the rhythm for us, but I guess we can't count on that every time!
Great having new members attend. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next meet-up.

Hi everyone, I'm looking forward to seeing you all here at the barn tomorrow!! A few things come to mind:

    Parking:
    * In my driveway, especially for those who have difficult walking, there's room for about 7-8 cars to the side. Pull all the way in on the left and close to one another.
    * I expect we can park on the lawn across from my driveway. You'll see at least one car there if it's OK to do that.
    * Charter Lane - there's plenty of parking on this side-street two doors down from our driveway

Also, bring a chair with you for jamming IF you have one that's both comfortable & portable

    See you soon!!

Peggy[masked], You're welcome to call if you have ANY questions
