Manayunk Book Club March Meetup

Hello Manayunk Book clubbers! In March, we will be reading Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell. It was the winner by a considerable margin.

"Ree Dolly's father has skipped bail on charges that he ran a crystal meth lab, and the Dollys will lose their house if he doesn't show up for his next court date. With two young brothers depending on her, 16-year-old Ree knows she has to bring her father back, dead or alive. Living in the harsh poverty of the Ozarks, Ree learns quickly that asking questions of the rough Dolly clan can be a fatal mistake. But, as an unsettling revelation lurks, Ree discovers unforeseen depths in herself and in a family network that protects its own at any cost."

Sounds like we'll have plenty to talk about. Please keep sending recommendations for future books!

Can't believe I missed this! Somehow it didn't even get on my calendar, I'm invoking the mom brain excuse. So upset, I read the book and everything! I was really looking forward to it. Did you decide on a book for next month? I won't forget again!

Hi, Stephanie, welcome to the group! Yes, when we meet indoors (September-March or April), we do limit attendance because we've found it difficult to manage a discussion around a table of more than 15 or so (hard to hear, side conversations, etc.) In warmer months,we meet outside in Pretzel Park, and do not limit RSVPs.

That being said, recently we've been encouraging waitlist people to read the book and keep an eye on the meeting announcement--we frequently have attrition within the 24-48 hours before the meeting, as well as no-shows the day of. 5 or fewer on the waitlist the day of the meeting, and it's likely we'll still have room. We also sometimes schedule second sessions if there's a lot of interest in a book and someone is available to lead the discussion.

    Hope that helps!

Hi, I'm new to the group. I'm on the "waitlist". Is that because there are only so many spots available for each meetup? Thanks!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
