Mandarin Learners' Toastmaster event for ALL levels II

  • Mar 28, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • Confucius Institute Library at BCIT downtown campus

Dear members,

The first "Toast Master" for Chinese Learners meetup went well and I am encouraged to run another one now. However, to improve it, I have thought about several solutions to give everyone more opportunity to talk.

First, I will keep the three groups, because it seems to work better when people are grouped with members at their own level and work on the same type of materials.

Second, instead of spending one third of the time at the end for vocabulary improvement, I will leave that part for you to take home and take advantage of the in person time for more talking. So, we will run two rounds instead of one.

Third, I will think of a topic ahead of the time, and post it here. People who are interested in preparing a speech (2minutes limit) at home and bring it over are more than welcome to. If you are only interested in listening to other people, you are also welcome to.

Last but not least, I will assign each member a role when the speaking round starts, so everyone can have something to say.

This time, I want to guarantee every member a good quality time, so I will limit the workshop to maximum 25 attendees and I will keep the attendant sheet and ask everyone to sign in. If you can't come for some reason after you responded "yes", please kindly change it as soon as possible to give other members a chance to join it. This is also helpful for me to prepare for the workshop.

Let's work together to make it better. See you next Wednesday!

Next time, people who have speeches ready can tell me ahead of the time, so I have it on my mind. Last night was a pleasure to meet the new members and to see the old friends.

It was interesting, engaging and informative. Gerrie did a great job offering appropriate and fun Mandarin speaking exercises to three groups of people with varying levels. Her insightful comments are clear and helpful. Thank you, Gerrie!

Hi this group will require upper level beginner to intermediate level to complete the activities. However, if you are interested in listening as an absolute beginner, you are also welcome.

    Hi Gerrie,
I would like to know if this group is for beginners or advance. I took a basic mandarin course a while ago.

Wow, you are so organized. I am really looking forward to meeting you. Preparing a speech sounds like a great challange which I will endeavor to do. I wonder if I will be able to understand myself...
