I speak everyday Mandarin and would like to practice more because I do business in China now, and want to sound intelligent and have a solid business vocabulary when doing business in Mandarin.
Native speaker who has the sentence structure down, but my vocabulary desperately needs help. I think I have a hua qiao accent :).
Born in Vancouver but family from Shanghai and fled to Taipei during the communist revolution. I was the first generation born here. Mandarin was my first and only language until I was 9, then I picked up English in school. Parents didn't believe in ESL class so I was placed in regular English school in Richmond and didn't understand a word being spoken in preschool, kindergarten or first grade, then voila! As kids do, one day I just found myself understanding what everyone around me ways saying.
I'm a Vancouver-born Chinese whose first language was Mandarin but now my English ability far surpasses my Mandarin ability. It's disheartening! I just moved back to Vancouver after living abroad for 17 years and am learning to love the city again.
