The Zone System - Getting it right the first time

This MeetUp is a follow up to the MPC August 12 Education night.  Ansel Adams and Fred Archer developed sensitometry for exposing and processing film at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, around 1939-40. These Zone System principles also apply for exposing and processing RAW digital media files.

We will be meeting at and exploring the San Francisco Theological Seminary where the rich architecture will give us many opportunities to work on understanding and fine-tuning how to apply the Zone system.
Having your own 18% Neutral Density Grey card, or some very very close facsimile would be a very good idea.

With more photos popping up, it is fun and enlightening to see all the perspectives... and so much talent. Again, thanks Glen, for your help and insight and tons of tips & pointers!!!

This outdoor class, graciously hosted & coached by Glen--- sure got me back into my creative wave… even though I initially, couldn't find some functions on my new (apparently more complex) Sony camera. Fortunately, I seemed to sense how to toggle to, & adjust the aperture, after I selected the correct ISO, while in Manual mode--- which I happily played with for the very first time, (and was thrilled to use); while I'll upload some light-to-dark Seminary photos asap! Thank you so much Glen, for your kind & enthusiastic inspiration… to coax me out of my comfort zone, by getting me into using +/- zeroing out, to get some detailed light-to-dark, high contrast photos! Great! :-)

Wonderful information, Glen Graves opened up a new door for shooting in manual mode. Very educational and enjoyable 2 hours. Fantastic meetup!

Glen Graves was great at giving an important explanation of the zone system as it applies to digital photography. He also took the time to answers each participants questions. He also shared the importance of shooting in manual mode versus "automatic" on a digital camera. I look forward to future meetup with his leadership. Thanks Glen.

So many light bulbs of understanding went off I think I'll be lit up for a year. This was a great workshop. I finally understand and mostly embrace the use and need of the manual setting. And I really appreciate your comments regarding when to use the Auto settings.

Glen, thank you! I've read about grey cards for decades, but never used one. This really does work! Thanks again.

    Re: Check list for Saturday.
1: Have your ISO set to the lowest possible number _ Never ever let this go to Auto
2: Have your meter set to spot
3: Have your camera set to manual
    and the usual
4: Have a fully charged battery
5: Have a couple of memory cards.. Best to format the one that you will be using for the "get together."
Please bring an 18% grey card
Please bring a sense of humor.
