The Marquee Club meet up group for web designers and developers who are passionate about perfecting their craft, and sharing their knowledge with the community.

We aim to build a community in the Seattle and Pacific North West region where we can learn about and share knowledge of the key tenants of great web design and development, including web standards, usability, compatibility, accessibility, performance, maintainability and more.

Where and when we meet

The group has no fixed schedule and location. We currently plan to meet every 2 to 3 months at a convenient location in the city. We may change this as we grow and learn the needs of the community.

Why the name?

It may sound like a strange name for a web community, and indeed it is. It all started on a typically rainy Seattle afternoon and a trip to the Experience Music Project. I was looking for a name for a planned meet up group, and when wandering around the Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London exhibit, I saw a poster for a gig at the Marquee Club. The name just seemed perfect. As a British transplant to Seattle, and a fan of Hendrix (who made the opposite journey) and the other great bands that played at the seminal music venue, it was a name I could associate with.

More importantly, during the dark days of the great browser wars, when browser vendors were adding non-standard markup left, right, and center, the marquee element was added to Internet Explorer by the local software giant Microsoft. There is something deliciously ironic about naming a web standards-focused meet up after a non-standard element. It is a great reminder of what used to be, and the dangers of repeating it. Of course, since then, marquee has seen the light, and been legitimized as a CSS module.

In the world of sport, a player at the top of their game is often called a marquee player, or a marquee signing if they switch sides. We hope through our meet ups and the associated community, we can help members to evolve their skills and become marquee designers and developers.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
