Late Spring Wildflowers and Heaths Along the Gunpowder River

Explore late spring wildflowers and heaths along the Gunpowder River in Hereford, Maryland: Nodding Trillium, Miterwort, Greek Valerian along with other spring wildflowers.  We'll explore downstream in the morning, return to our cars for lunch, and then explore upstream in the afternoon.

This hike is sponsored jointly with the Maryland Native Plant Society.

Bring lunch and water. You can buy lunch at Graul's supermarket in the shopping center on Mt. Carmel Road just east of the exit from I-83.

The leader, Dwight Johnson, is an experienced botanist.  Contact him: [masked] or [masked].

Directions: Because of the number of participants, we are now planning to meet and set up carpools from the Park & Ride on Mount Carmel Rd. for a short ride to the trailhead. When traveling north on I-83 take exit 27 onto Mount Carmel Rd. Turn left at Mount Carmel Rd.  Pass over I-83 and you will see the Park & Ride on your right.

These are directions to the trail head in case you are late or need to leave early:

From the Baltimore Beltway, go north on I-83 for 12 miles and take exit 27 onto Mount Carmel Road.  Turn left (west) and proceed for 0.7 miles.  Turn right onto Masemore Road.  Proceed another 1.5 miles to the parking area.  The speed limit is posted as 10 mph at the bottom of Masemore Road.  Believe it.  There is a very sharp turn at the mill.

Cost: none

I enjoyed it, for the most part, but being a person who is satisfied to know the common names of things, it was a bit of TMI, as the kids say. Standing around really tires me out, so my friend and I decided to leave after lunch. I did learn a lot, and got ID's for several plants I had been wondering about for a while. The knowledgeableness (is that a word?) of the others in the group was a distinct asset!

If you need help identifying additional plants, you don't need to wait for the next walk. Post some photos here or at the Natural History Society of Maryland Facebook page. Mentors are monitoring.

So sorry - my best friend is in early labor and I am her primary support person. I will have to miss this event - I hope you all see some beautiful wild flowers!

I didn't realize this is the same time as the bird walk. I RSVP for two at the same time. :(

My father's birthday celebration has been moved to this day so I will give away my spot.
