Searching for Snowy Owls at National Airport

Join birder Bob Ringler to search for Snowy Owls at Reagan National Airport.  Last Sunday our Meetup group had wonderful views of the bird.  Tens of thousands of these large white birds have migrated south from the Arctic and have been seen everywhere from Minnesota to Assateague Island in a phenomenon know as an irruption.

Meet at the Park & Ride just off the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) at Exit 8, Hammonds Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. The Park & Ride is just across the street from the end of the off ramp. If coming from the north on the Beltway, take Exit 8B, and the ramp leads directly to the Park & Ride. If coming from the south on the Beltway, take Exit 8 to Nursery Road, turn right onto Nursery Road, right onto Hammonds Ferry Road, and left into the Park & Ride.

We will travel from there to Gravelly Point, which is the observation area for Reagan-National Airport on the Virginia side of the Potomac River from Washington DC.

There will be very little walking once we arrive at the site.  When we find an owl, we will have at least one telescope for focusing on it.  There should be good light remaining when one is spotted. Other birdwatchers will be present. Dress for cold weather and bring food and beverage if you like, and binoculars.  Expect to stay there until sunset or later when the owls become active.

This is the ninth Snowy Owl Bob has seen this winter; most did not stay for long. These were first seen on January 5th, and at least one has been seen every evening since.

Unsatisfactory view of very distant perched bird. It got away without our getting a closer look. I could try again next Saturday since I am occupied on Sunday. I am hoping one will show up closer to Baltimore.

I may have to work on Saturday, but if I don't, would love to go with you. I really enjoyed it.

We saw one, not a satisfying view or action packed, but glad to have seen one!

I would be driving from Rockville so it doesn't make sense for me to meet at the Park and Ride. Could I meet you around the Reagan area? Where exactly and at what time?

I can't go the 26th but would love to do this. Are any more trips planned? I would even give up watching some of the superbowl to see the owl...
