Collecting and Pressing Plants - Center for Maryland Agriculture

Would you like to learn how to conduct a plant species survey?  Join us at the Baltimore County Center for Maryland Agriculture and Farm Park as we collect specimens of plants that flower in the summer.  We will also press them so that they can later be identified and included in an inventory of what grows at the Ag Center.  While we are collecting samples, if you enjoy photography, you can take pictures of the plants for us to post online.

This workshop is sponsored by the Baltimore County Master Gardeners in conjunction with the Natural History Society of Maryland, and is part of a much larger project: an inventory of the plant species growing throughout the seasons of the year and in the varied habitats at the Baltimore County property.  Species of trees and shrubs, grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants will all be included in the inventory.

The workshop will be run by volunteers Judy Fulton, Charlie Davis and Vanessa BeauchampCharlie is a professional ecologist who is currently inventorying the plants on the cliffs of the Harpers Ferry Historic Park for the National Park Service. Vanessa is a botany professor in the Biological Department at Towson University, and her research interests include plant community ecology.  Judy is a researcher coordinating the inventory at the Ag Center.  She’s a Master Gardener and an active member of the Maryland Native Plant Society.

Workshop participants will be limited to eight people besides Charlie, Vanessa and Judy.  This plant collection is the third in a series throughout 2014.  All levels of experience are welcome, and there are no prerequisites.  Anyone with basic knowledge of how to use plant keys to ID plants can also sign up to attend the plant identification labs.  The labs started in January, and are held on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.  (For the labs, see

Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and sturdy boots for walking through about two miles of mixed terrain.  Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, plenty of water, and lunch.  Plant presses will be provided.
