The extreme storm of last night meant no power at the Benjaman Banneker Center for microscopes--so we shared the older scopes with the mirrors and moved to the gazeboo and positioned the edges of the picnic tables in the sun for the scopes. A nearby maple tree was the focus of our moss searching. The more experienced participants examined Orthotrichum-like plants. We never resoloved whether the group was examining one or two species-we suspected two. The lack of microscopes slowed down the investigation process. We noticed multiple gemmae on the leaves of one sample, immersed stomata on one capsule, but capsule and leaf shapes were slightly different among the samples. New participants practiced sample preparation and microscope use, and examined oil bodies of a Frullannia leaf and effect of focus on perceiving dimensionality of a moss leaf.
