MARA Herp Search at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

Jug Bay is an excellent place for photography, reptiles and amphibians, insects and tons of fun. Please be prepared to hike through open fields, wooded areas and streams. Pack a camera and a small water bottle with a snack or two. Please bring a lunch that you can leave in your vehicle. We will explore two different areas and take a break in between for lunch.

Start time is promptly at 9 a.m. to 12 for the first area, then lunch and 1 p.m. to 3 or 4 for the second area. This has always been a terrific trip in the past. This meetup will fill up fast - so sign up early! We hike at a leisurely slow pace and observe and enjoy everything the natural world has to offer!

Essential item list; camera, water, tick spray (not deet, but Repel Permanone) on clothing and shoes (not for skin contact).

As always, we respect this incredible park and we always leave it as we found it.

Dicks Sporting Goods sells a brand called Sawyer premium insect repellent which contains permethrin (0.5%). Its behind the "wall" of the overly promoted Off brand repellent.

REI didn't have Repel permanone. Because of driving around in the storm I wasn't going to keep looking. They had Repel DEET , I didn't remember the instruction against it so I got it. Can I go ahead and use it tomorrow.

Hi folks. For those who don't know me I'm a naturalist at the Sanctuary. We have a fish research project we're conducting tomorrow morning in our streams. I need to ask that your herping expeditions do not go into the streams until after 12 pm so that we can conduct our survey. Thank you, and have fun!

    Hi Joan,
If you can't find Repel (Permanone), look for products that contain Permethrin (typically 0.5% A. I.) The REI store does sell Repel Permanone. I buy mine from Cabela's (not local). After 13 months on crutches - due to the little buggers, I learned my lesson about Ticks!!!

I haven't been able to find tick Permanone. Can anyone direct me to a store that carries it? Or be able to share some with me?

    Hello everyone,
Very excited about this Saturday at Jug Bay. Pleassee... no more submissions. We can only handle about 20 people. Those who have signed up are just fine. But unfortunately, please no more. I am personally overwhelmed by the great response. We definitely need to do more!! Thank you for caring about wildlife and wild places. Also, there is a race that day at the park that we were not aware of. Please arrive between 8 -8:30 am and be mindful of the runners when driving.Thanks.

Hello to all, this is one of our favorite trips of the year! Last visit we found spade foot toads! A rare find since they are subterranean most of the year. Of course we observe everything from a newborn fawn hidden by a log to pink bellied eastern worm snakes in a stream valley.
