Songs of Insects Walk - POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER TO SATURDAY NIGHT

Songs of Insects Walk – Friday, August 10 –7:30 pm

Join naturalist Lloyd Tydings for a walk around Carrie Murray Nature Center.  We’ll be listening to insect songs and trying to catch a glimpse of the singers: katydids and crickets.

This walk will help you get ready to participate in Cricket Crawl 2012—an evening sound census of late summer insects on August 24.  As we walk we’ll be focusing on the eight target species of the Crawl. To preview and listen to those eight, and to learn about the Crawl itself, visit http://tinyurl.com/7y5trym.

Meet at the Carrie Murray Nature Center. Raindate: Saturday, August 11

Great walk! I learned 6 calls! Last night I identified Lesser and Greater Anglewings, Fall Field Crickets, and Jumping Bush Crickets in my own backyard!

Good audio tools to help us hear the sample and then listen for the cricket or katydid. It was neat hearing the insects call back to the audio! I am musically challenged, but made some progress in separating out the different night sounds and identifying at least one or two insect calls.

We heard the Common True Katydid, Fall Field Cricket, Lesser Anglewing, Japanese Burrowing Cricket, and the Jumping Bush Cricket--five of the eight species that we'll be listening for on the 8/24 Cricket Crawl 2012. The rain held off, and a rainbow shone through the clouds. A great night with a congenial group of people.

Great listening! Definitely heard a greater anglewing at Lake Montebello on my way home!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
