Beneficial Bats in Your Belfry: Exploring the World of Bats

In celebration of the International Year of the Bat, DNR biologist Kerry Wixted will present a talk about these beneficial, yet sometimes misunderstood creatures. She will review basic bat biology as well as neat species of bats found around the world and in your backyard. The talk will also address threats to bats and conservation measures.

Kerry Wixted is a biologist for the MD Department of Natural Resources. Kerry is the Maryland state coordinator for Project WILD and runs programs such as Wild Acres which focuses on backyard wildlife habitat. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management from Frostburg State University and a master’s degree in Biology from West Virginia University.

Lots of great facts about bats--loved the examples of bat diversity. Also provided useful information on how to attract wildlife to your backyard with bat boxes.
