Martin Schmidt, author of Maryland's Geology, offers this workshop as an overview of the geology of Maryland--the landforms, the underlying rocks and their structure, and a bit on the long history that put it all together. Maryland has a quite varied geology, so there's plenty to talk about. We'll do a quick tour of the basics. We can also discuss specific places that participants are interested in, which will lead us to subjects and destinations for future workshops and field trips.
Martin Schmidt has been teaching grades 9-12 at McDonogh School since 1978, including physics, chemistry, and geosciences over the years. He currently teaches an Honors Geology course to 12th graders, which also earns students credits from Towson University.
His book, Maryland's Geology (Schiffer Publishers), is designed to give a basic geologic background and then apply it to the state, for students, teachers, and laymen.
