Plants of Overlea

Need some help with this one - the one with the red stem. Anyone? One thing to note is that there are small thorns on the stems.

In this photo:

  • Japanese hops

Leaves resemble Cannabis because this plant is closely related http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabaceae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humulus http://www.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/humja.htm http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=humulus+japonicus&qpvt=humulus+japonicus&FORM=IGRE#x0y2442

Thank you, Charlie! This one is Japanese Hops! The climbing or trailing growth habit, conspicuously 5-lobed leaves, and stems with downward pointed prickles are all characteristics that help in the identification of Japanese hops. Wild cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) also has 5-lobed leaves and a similar growth habit, however this weed has tendrils and does not have the downward pointing prickles along the stem like Japanese hops.
