Toby Cowern All Levels Course

  • May 11, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Toby Cowern, our British instructor, will be coming to do a course with us May 11-12. You can see a short bio on him here. If you want to see what attendees said about the last Toby trip, check out the reviews!

This will be an all-levels course: anyone who is interested is welcome, even if you've never been camping before. Topics may include but are not limited to:

Fire lighting
Shelter building
Survival psychology and strategy
Priorities of survival
Attracting attention
Use of sharp implements
Knife/Axe sharpening
Basic knots
Improvised cordage
Wilderness cooking
Sourcing safe water
Acquiring food
Camp craft
Emergency first aid
Survival equipment selection
Wilderness hazard identification

Carpooling will be required as there isn't much parking space; I will put drivers in touch with riders when we get closer to the date. It takes about 2.5 - 3 hours to drive to the site, and everyone should plan to arrive at 10 AM on Saturday. We will hike about 10-15 minutes in to the campsite and the weekend will begin. Everyone is responsible for their own food, and it is recommended that you bring something you can cook easily over a fire, as there won't be anything else!

Course kit list is here. Unless specifically discussed with Todd or I, you must have everything on this list to come on the course.  Please email me if you have questions about gear- you do not have to spend hundreds of dollars to find all of these things.  Consider what you do spend an investment- these items, kept in your car, could come in handy someday...

Hope to see a bunch of people there!

Very informative and productive, we were busy every second of the day, and night. On Saturday, mother nature took care of us- we were wet , cold and miserable for about 5 hours, that gave Tobey a break from having to do it himself... The group was awesome, I would get lost with any of you anytime. Thanks Tobey for a great "miserable" 4 day survival course. I think I am beginning to understand how it feels to be lost and stranded and hungry and tired and cold and desperate to come back to civilization. Hope to see you again in October.

Being that you have less turnout than you expected, could I get in on this meet? I apologize for missing the RSVP, I just found out about it. I can drive Leon, as I'll have a car and live close to Worcester if Armen cannot do so.

Hi Patrick, I'm sorry it didn't work to get you out on this trip- I was already in the woods when you left this note. There will be other courses, watch for the announcements!

I like to come along! I have a extra cab 4x4 pickup truck with locking cap (can take 2-3 riders along)! I have been fatigued a lot (going thru a divorce) but I really want to go!

Aw! I'm sorry I didn't announce it sooner. There will be another Toby course in October and you're welcome to come on that one; will try to get the dates out earlier!

Is this something I can do if I'm a newbie? I really would like to join this groups and learn some outdoors techniques

You can totally come as a newbie; it would be a great course for that.
