January Practical Outing

Our first group outing! Jan. 21 - 23 in Hinsdale, MA.

This will be a winter course (read: COLD). We will be going to a piece of private land in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts to try surviving for two nights in the cold. (Attendees can choose to attend one or both nights if they want). We will work on basic skills at this outing: shelter building, fire lighting, sourcing water. We will discuss staying warm and managing your gear. This will be a very practical course; members will work in pairs or threes and we will try to group people with more experience with people with less experience in order to help as many people out as possible. Mike and I will also help people building shelters as necessary. Check out the message board for a basic course kit list. I recommend that anyone interested in this trip have all the gear listed; you can bring as much as you want but that's the minimum. Challenge yourself but be safe, and remember that you pack in and out all your own gear (including food). More details to come, but those are the basics. There will be a limit of 15 total people on this trip and I am opening it up to everyone; it will be first come first serve by PayPal payment. If you are interested, please RSVP and you'll be added to the list pending receiving your payment; I will manage the attendee list and will let you know if you have a spot. Cost will be $20 (to cover land rental and insurance fees) and I will send a link via PayPal when I get your RSVP (or discuss with me to arrange another method of payment).

I apologize for the small group but there will be other outings and I am new to this whole supervisory role so I'm going to try to keep it manageable. If I get an overwhelming response I'll try very hard to accommodate everyone in the future! Thank you for your interest!

The January Practical Outing was awesome!!! Nice people, good organized, a lot of fun and I learned a lot during the weekend! I would certainly recommend people to go to the practical outings since you will learn a lot about what you can and can't do during a survival situation.

It was an awsome experience. It felt great to build a shelter that served its purpose, I was warm all night (except my nose that was out of the sleeping bag). Lisa and Mike check on us throughout the night which made me feel very safe. It was a very nice group of people.

Thanks Lisa! This was really awesome. I got to test out a bunch of things I've been thinking about, and I learned so much. I've got a new shelter design and fire system planned that I can't wait to test out in February. And I'm brining a gatorade bottle for emergencies! ;)

You can come for just Friday night if you want, and if you can get transportation back. I think everyone so far is either planning to do both nights or just Saturday.

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
