This will be a shorter than usual trip. We will start Saturday morning and spend the night, heading back home Sunday afternoon.

Todd

Since this will be a short trip I think we should concentrate on shelter building and fire. We will all make an individual shelter for the night and a personal fire, we will probably also have a common fire in the communal area. I would love to hear from folks with any other idea or things that you would like to cover. i am open to pretty much anthing we have time for. Make note of a few things: Here is the link for the basic equipment list: https://sites.google.com/site/masurvivalcourse2010/course-kit-list Wool and polypropylene are crucial.  Cotton is marginal at best and in really wet weather is actually dangerous (we'll talk about this on the trip, but take my word for it for now). , As long as we're on the topic, plan to wear lots of layers (on your body, on your hands, and on your feet). That way we can adjust our temperature to fit our current level of activity.  Big parkas are only useful if you're walking from your car to your house and plan to be warm on both ends; when outdoors, they're just bulk In general, equipment can be found for cheap, you don't have to spend significant $$$.  However, the basic equipment list is just that- a basic list.  You must have all of the things on that list.  If you want to bring more than that, that is totally up to you- there will be no kit or food restriction on this trip.

Some snow, then some rain, then below freezing at night. Pretty much hypothermia city. Please please please bring an extra set of wool socks and long johns and a waterproof sleeping system. If you trust your safety equipment you have the freedom to experiment with your shelters in these kinds of conditions without fear.

Just a heads up, I'll be arriving around 11am. I'll try to follow everyone's trail in. Leaving a few trail markers would make it easier, and might be a fun/useful exercise. If I can't find you guys, I'll just call. I Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Ok, how about the Stop & Shop at 40 Franklin Village Drive? What time would you want to meet up?

There are the Forge Park and Dean College T stops with parking...both are pretty close to 495, Forge Park a little more so, right off of exit 17. There's also a a decent-sized shopping center right off of 17. Parking near me is a little tight, so those should be your best bets.

Alex R-whatever works for you. Is there somewhere near you/495 where I could leave my car over night?

Hey. I live in central sq cambridge and can take some people. If nobody needs a ride from that area I may just drive to chelsea and ride up with Vijay.

I'm planning to driving up from 325 Commandants Way, Chelsea. If anyone wants to meet me there we can carpool, I have room for three more. There's free parking, and it's accesible by mbta bus (although I'm not sure if the buses runs before 6am). Chipping in for gas would be appreciated :).

  • Alex R.

Sure, where are you thinking of meeting?

    March 27, 2012

  • Andrew S.

Hey, Alex R. I live in Mansfield, I could meet you guys near Franklin if you still have room for one more? I'd be more than happy to pitch in for gas.

Hey everyone...I'm looking forward to meeting you all and getting out in the woods this weekend. Jamie and myself will be driving out together from the Franklin area, and will have room for one more if anyone's interested. Unfortunately the first train won't be getting into Franklin until later Saturday morning so that won't be an option, but if anyone lives nearby or along the way, let me know.

Hey everyone, I'm 18 with some basic wilderness experience, enough to avoid making a fool out of myself. This would be a first trip for me, any tips? Looking to go on the 31th trip. Otherwise just saying hi and looking foward to the 31st!

    Any details ....

Is the time shown (6am) when it actually 'starts', or was that more of a placeholder? Coming from SE Mass, I may arrange to stay in that area Friday night if we need to meet that early.

Any decision made on the location?
