Every year so far we've done an outing the second weekend of January, and we're coming up on that time again (crazy, eh?). I'm posting early so that anyone who wants to come can have a heads-up on dates and make sure they've got the right equipment. (New! Kit lists! Check them out!)
The course will start Friday morning early and go until late Sunday morning. Anyone who can't make it for three days or who is nervous about spending two nights in the cold is welcome to come just for two days, but I recommend coming for the full time if you can. Course fee will be $20 to cover the use of the land.
Cold weather is pretty challenging in and of itself, so there won't be any expectation of gear or food limitations (unless people want to put those on themselves; if so, let me know and we can discuss). We will work on skills like shelter building, managing moisture (both intake of moisture and preventing yourself from getting wet), and fire building in the cold; we will also discuss preventing, recognizing and managing hypothermia.
And there will be food roasted on a fire under the stars in the snow. There ain't much better than that :).
It will be a small course because it's safer that way. If we get a lot of interest, though, we'll see if we can do one in February as well.
Please note: I reserve the right to cancel this trip at the last minute if the weather is forecasted to be too severe. If I do that, I will refund everyone's fees. Training and learning is one thing, asking for trouble is another.
- Nighttime temps predicted to be less than 5 degrees F
- More than 8 inches of snow predicted to fall in 24 hours
- Blizzard conditions
- Freezing rain
- Anything else that I haven't thought of that makes me nervous :).
If you have any questions, please let me know! Hope to see you there!
