Web Dev Meetup - March 2014

SpeakerAlexander Schmitz

Topic: Optimizing performance on mobile

So I've set this up for Monday, March 10.  Pizza (Ottos) and beer shall arrive around six, with talks beginning at 6:30.

It's been a long time since we've managed to get together and talk about the Wonderful World of Web Dev.  I propose we get this meetup up and running again.  Portland Webworks has agreed to host and provide the much desired pizza.  I was thinking we could schedule this for some time in early March.  Which days would be best for everyone?

If anyone has anything they would be willing to give a talk about or would like learn more about, comment below!

Suggested Topics:

• Version Control

• SASS

• responsive development

• mobile frameworks

• jQuery Stuff (UI, Mobile, general)

• SSL

• Prototyping for Customers

• Justin Steele (SSL For Everyone)

• Brent Danley (Sass, version control, responsive development)

• Sarah (Responsive Best Practices/Mobile First)

Thank you everyone for showing up last night! It was great seeing everyone. Thank you Alexander for your presentation on Optimizing performance on mobile!

It's a month away, but I'm currently working on organizing the next meetup (link can be found here: http://www.meetup.com/me-webdev/events/170627152/ )

If anyone has a topic they would like to present at the next meetup, please ping me and let me know. I'll compile together a list of presenters/topics and we can vote on a topic.

Meetup was fantastic, thanks to Alexander and everyone who helped put the event on. Heard a lot of interesting discussions happening before the talk, but didn't have time to meet everyone. If anyone is interested in meeting for coffee and chatting about remote work, managing tech teams, or any web dev topics, reach out!

Excellent! Alexander was, obviously, very knowledgable and did a nice run-through of jQuery UI/Mobile with great tips on performance, etc. Q&A session at the end was also very informative. I definitely learned some things I can apply to projects right away, and other things to add to my list of things for which I need to learn more about.

Meetup is tomorrow, and I'm going to put in the order for Otto's pizza early tomorrow afternoon. If you could please make sure your RSVP is accurate so I know how many pizzas to order it would be much appreciated.

    Also, any pizza preferences?

It'd be great if meetups were recorded, if feasible by the hosting area, and put on YouTube. Good way to promote the group.

Great idea! I'll look into seeing if this is feasible to set up for Monday's meetup.

Have we determined who will be speaking? I am interested in the topics Brent and Elliot have on desk.

This time around it's going to be Alexander. We'll discuss on the 10th about who is available to talk for the following meetup.

If anyone has any interest in anything jQuery related i'm a member of the jQuery Team, The development lead for jQuery Mobile, and also work on jQuery ui. Would be happy to talk about anything jQuery related.

Sure the talk right now is a little specific to jQuery mobile as its for jQconf and ill do a bit at the beginning to introduce the foundation what we do and the offerings we have.

So it seems that Mondays tend to be good for people. Maybe have this around the second Monday in March?

    I vote for Alex. :)

    February 12, 2014

  • Brent D.

I'd be willing to do a presentation on Sass, version control, responsive development. Would love to learn more about frameworks and SSL.

  • Matt S.

I wouldn't mind giving a presentation/talk on RWD. What level or area of focus? An intro-level, deep dive crash course, half hour max?

    February 12, 2014

  • Justin S.

I will be back in the state on the 5th of March. If that first week works for everyone else I won't be offended, but I am free after that point.

I'd love to do a "SSL for everyone" talk, but doubt I could get it ready in time.

    February 12, 2014

    • Sarah

We could always do that as a future talk.

      February 12, 2014

  • Russ J.

Any day is fine for me. I'll be there. I'm deep into JS nowadays and happy to discuss.

  • Matt S.

    Would love to attend.

    February 12, 2014

  • Elliot M.

Hi! I'd love to attend, Mondays and Thursdays are best for me. I'd be happy to present about version control, deployment, getting a prototype ready for real customers, and I'd be interested in learning about all the things you list ed.

Monday and Tuesday nights work best for me. WordPress Meetup usually meets 3rd Tuesday of each month and Maine Tweetup meets 3rd Thursday, both in Portland.

As long as it's not when I'm away (Mar 3-7).

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
