The Bowie Meditation group meets twice a month at the Goodloe Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church in Pointer Ridge on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings of each month, 7:15 – 8:30pm. The group welcomes all. No prior experience in meditation is needed. We just bring your hearts and hopes, and sit with them together, allowing the "mud" in our lives to settle and our minds to clear.
In meditation, we focus on quieting the mind, encouraging the heart, and in finding the simple, natural connections to all life around us. Although, everyone’s experience is different, many have felt the calm and clarity to be beneficial.
Our meditation periods include both spoken guidance and the unspoken support of others following the same practice. Usually, the group begins with a short period of introduction, transitions to a 20 minute seated meditation, and then shares a few minutes of walking meditation before a teaching around the subject of meditation is presented. Meditators sit on cushions or chairs, and walking is optional.
We are a "peer led" group, sharing teachings in the Insight Meditation and Mindfulness traditions. At this time our group leaders (Lee, Alex, and Azara) generally alternate in leading the evening meditation and teaching. All three are experienced meditators who have practiced and studied meditation under various teachers. Please feel most welcome to take part.
On the fourth Thursday of the month, we usually have optional tea and conversation after meditation. You may bring you own mats and pillows, use the mats and pillows at the church, or use a church chair. Weather Policy: If Prince George's County Public Schools do not open, or if they close early, due to weather, we will not have a meet-up on that evening.
