Melbourne Festival: The Future of Classical Music Performance

"Join the Managing Director of London’s Barbican Centre, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, as he presents an incisive, thought-provoking talk on the state of classical performance in the modern age.

Tradition and innovation have often been at odds in the musical world: Brahms was perceived as reactionary, Wagner as progressive. But from the 21st century it all looks very different, as performers adjust to huge cultural change around them.

Since its inception, classical music has been evolving, driven by changes in taste, shifts in audience and – most drastically – by a century of recording and broadcasting. But recent years have seen even more radical changes in performing styles; what has driven this new richness and diversity? And what does the future hold?

Following on the night after the talk will be an evening of Wagnerian mastery from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, titled Wagner and the Orchestra. Preluding the performance will be a discussion from Sir Nicholas Kenyon and award winning conductor Asher Fisch."
