Zelman Symphony Orchestra 80th Birthday Celebrations - Mahler 8

"In 2013 Zelman Symphony will celebrate its 80th Anniversary, with two performances of Mahler's epic Eighth Symphony - Symphony of a Thousand.

We will have over 600 performers on stage, including a choir of over 400, a children's choir of 80, eight of Australia’s leading opera singers as soloists, the magnificent organ and an orchestra of 120.

We are proud to bring this rarely performed work to the public, and involve many of Melbourne's community choirs, community orchestral musicians and invited professional musicians, many of whom have performed with us in the past."

    The Siren (Mahler 8)

    Sweet soprano
    You sing for me
    Your tone, hypnotic
    Your song alluring, seductive
    I am your servant
    Your every wish
    Is my command

I give my all to you
    To sing forever
    In my memory
    For fear I forget
Let me be cast upon the rocky shores
    Of unrequited love Rodney

    Hi Cath,
I was about to reply as a YES to this, but ended up being rounded up on Tuesday evening to do front of house - so will maybe see you all as an Usher..Will try to catch up with you all afterwards, depending on FOH duties.

Hi Ray, It would be great to all meet up after the concert as well - maybe go for an early dinner somewhere/coffee if people are interested?

Checking on the net, it appears that the performance itself should be just under 90 minutes. I'm not sure how much extra time should be allowed but my guess is that we would be out by 6:30pm.

Would be good to meet up after the concert on Sunday! I haven't introduced myself to anyone in this group as yet.

Mahler's so draining, but I'm really tempted by the spectacle of this! I'll give it some thought.

      Hi Nargiza,

When I think of Mahler, I think of long pieces that are difficult to follow. Difficult on a melodic level and at a larger form-of-the-piece level. They tend to have a stoic tone to them as well. It then becomes draining because my ears/mind have to work particularly hard to work out what's going on.

I quite like his first Symphony (probably my favourite of all Symphonies), but otherwise find it hard to get into his stuff. I'll probably still go though. :P

Stoic's probably not the word I was after (can a Romantic composer be stoic?), but hopefully you get the idea.

  • Julianna

Are we ordering our own ticket ?

    August 5, 2013

    • Cath

Hi Julianna - yes, I think that would be easier - it means we can't sit together at the concert as I am pretty sure they allocate seating in the town hall but could all catch up after the concert?

There is also a performance on Saturday 21st 8pm - if anyone is able to host that one let me know!
