NOTE: THIS IS A REAL EVENT!

Opening reception for Michael Light - Full Moon - The Apollo Missions

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 – the first landing on the Moon - Joseph Bellows Gallery is pleased to present FULL MOON: The Apollo Missions. The exhibition will feature photographs from Michael Light's book FULL MOON and will be on view from October 17th – December 5th, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 17th (5-8 pm).

From 1963 – 1972 NASA's Apollo program landed six missions on the moon and yielded a wealth of scientific data as well as 32,000 photographs. From 1995-2000, photographer Michael Light worked with NASA's archives to revisit and reexamine these photographs. Light's project culminated in a book and museum exhibition entitled FULL MOON. The book was published in six languages in 1999 (the American by Knopf, New York), and the museum exhibition opened concurrently that summer at London's Hayward Gallery and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The photographs from that show are now on permanent display at the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center for Earth and Space in Manhattan. In the years since, FULL MOON has come to be considered the definitive visual statement on the Apollo photographic archive.

As a landscape photographer Michael Light is not only interested in the physical aspects of a place but also spaces where humans seem dwarfed by their natural surroundings, places where they confront powerful natural forces. To him the Moon was perfect subject. For FULL MOON, Light chose 129 of the 32,000 images from NASA's archives and wove them into a narrative that begins with launch and is followed by a walk in space, an orbit of the Moon, lunar landing and exploration, and a return to Earth. He focused on images that had not been seen before and aimed to create the effect of the viewer being in space by including views looking out the spacecrafts' windows and close-ups of the astronauts. He also shows us the sublime grandeur of the Moon itself. Close-up images show its surface details and textures while images shot from above reveal its vastness and mass. Light's selection and arrangement of these images lead the viewer on a thrilling journey to the Moon, and his project is imbued with the same sense of adventure and discovery inherent in the Apollo missions themselves.

The photographs in the exhibition are all made using latest in direct-digital photographic printing processes from Light's drum scans of NASA masters. Light scanned at beyond-film grain resolution to capture every bit of information in the masters, and together with the subtlety allowed by digital image processing, these prints offer unprecedented clarity, scale and precision. There is nothing like them available through any channel, including NASA.

WFMU-FM is a listener-supported, non-commercial radio station broadcasting at 91.1 Mhz FM in Jersey City, NJ, right across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. It is currently the longest running freeform radio station in the United States.

The station also broadcasts to the Hudson Valley and Lower Catskills in New York, Western New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania via it's 90.1 signal at WXHD in Mount Hope, NY. The station maintains an extensive online presence at WFMU.ORG which includes live audio streaming in several formats, over 8 years of audio archives, podcasts and a popular blog.

Rolling Stone Magazine, The Village Voice, CMJ and the New York Press have all at one time or another called WFMU "the best radio station in the country" and the station has also been the subject of feature stories in The New York Times and on the BBC. In recent years the station has gained a large international following due it's online operations and counts Simpson's creator Matt Groening, film director Jim Jarmusch and Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed, among others, as devoted fans of the station.

WFMU's programming ranges from flat-out uncategorizable strangeness to rock and roll, experimental music, 78 RPM Records, jazz, psychedelia, hip-hop, electronica, hand-cranked wax cylinders, punk rock, gospel, exotica, R&B, radio improvisation, cooking instructions, classic radio airchecks, found sound, dopey call-in shows, interviews with obscure radio personalities and notable science-world luminaries, spoken word collages, Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtracks in languages other than English as well as Country and western music.

All of the station's programming is controlled by individual DJs and is not beholden to any type of station-wide playlist or rotation schedule. Experimentation, spontaneity and humor are among the station's most frequently noted distinguishing traits. WFMU does not belong to any existing public radio network, and close to 100% of its programming originates at the station.

Our usual spot in the crater with a host of alien beings from various solar systems and food that hasn't been seen by earthlings or Nasa food specialists.

Got a better way to spend your time?

Bring a friend! (Aliens welcome!)

PS: Anyone seen the can opener?

This group operates FREE since the Cosmic Space War Peace Treaty was signed.

Thank our fearless missing friend ED, who had the foresight to hide all the group gear in a pod at the base of Lunar Lake when the invasion occurred. Thanks Ed!
PS: If anyone happens to see Ed, please tell the organizers or the Interplanetary Police.

Renee has promised to bring Jello shooters for everyone.
Thanks Renee!

We'll be rolling moonballs at Cratered Lanes till the Earth comes up.

Join us for cheese and waffles in the Solar Coordinates Lounge
between decompressions.
Always a perpetually good time!

Bring tethers so you don't wind up floating away like happened to Ed
in 2004. Poor guy.
You must bring your gravity shoes but make sure they're the non-scuff
variety. The owners hate cleaning up tread marks.

Please park your space vehicles in the proper areas. Vehicles parked
in moon-handicapped spaces without distinguishing placards
WILL BE TOWED into moon orbit.

I'm organizing a little co-ed basketball in the weightless lunar
environment.

Please line up according to height when you arrive and change into
your non-marking space athletic shoes.

NOTE: The Lunar Athletic Center floor has just been resurfaced so
the treaded boots that were formerly okay, are no longer acceptable.

PS: Remember to bring your Space Passport! It's a long trip back
to the Space Center on the third planet from the sun,
if access is denied.
