Anna Calvi + Adalita @ Thornbury Theatre

Described by Brian Eno as 'the best thing since Patty Smith', Anna Calvi is a powerful new force on the music scene. Her self titled debut album was nominated for the Mercury Music prize, and her follow up, One Breath, is an equally intense and beautiful work. She has received rave reviews for her live performances such as these below:

She’s kept the crowd rapt to the slightest move of her little finger, but the only thing left to be scared of, as she closes with her Valkyrie take on Edith Piaf’s ‘Jezebel’, is how good tonight has been.”

Calvi is in possession of one of THE great voices. It moves from a throaty whisper to an ocean’s roar with minimum effort, captivating your ear and heart, and once you add in her ability as a guitar player then it’s a case of her being an unstoppable force.

when she sings, it’s as if molten lava were pouring from her mouth, a torrent of red-hot emotion.

Calvi proves herself to be a creature of contrasts throughout her mesmerizing performance.  Within seconds, her enigmatic voice can go from towering and grand, to hauntingly incandescent, as her lyrics effortlessly tap into a sonic romanticism that somehow treads boards between stunningly antiquated and fantastically modern.  Teamed with her guitar – a boldly expressive, idiosyncratic creation – she displays dense riffs and ethereal atmospheres nearly simultaneously, which can pull you close before it sends you flying across the room.

Tickets are $38 + bf and can be purchased here:

I would advise to purchase tickets in advance as they may sell out.

If you are a fan at all of the likes of Patti Smith or PJ Harvey, in fact of any artist who performs with intense heart and passion, then this is a show not to be missed.

Update: As if Anna Calvi herself wasn't exciting enough, Adalita has now been added as the support. The former lead singer of Magic Dirt is one of the most powerful female rock performers Australia has ever produced and she will provide the perfect lead in to Anna Calvi.

Agree, I am still processing how great she is! Suggestion for another meet up - Matt, I am already going to First Aid Kit and I know another member is too?

Hi Bec, tickets are sold out so we will have to keep out ear to the ground for third show! Or live vicariously through Stuart!

Truly phenomenal, that was a performance that will go down in my memory as one of the most awe-inspiring gigs I've ever seen. Anna Calvi is a rock goddess of the highest order. That incredible voice, the scintillating guitar work, it was all absolutely perfect. I was in heaven! And Adalita was a great support too. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Wow!!!

Moved into the band room for Adalita. In front of stage, but if not here yet might be best to meet near the bar after Adalita finishes.

Hi All, really looking forward to tomorrow night! I will make sure I'm there by 8pm and once there I will put a post on here detailing where I am. You can contact me on[masked] if you are having trouble finding us. Adalita is on at 8.30, followed by Anna. Also, there was a disturbing incident in Thornbury last week so I strongly urge all the ladies not to walk back to their cars alone after the gig if they are parked away from the venue. I am happy to walk anyone to their car, just let me know. See you all there!

Just a reminder to anyone thinking of going that I strongly advise buying your tickets as soon as possible. This is going to be a killer gig, and I would be very surprised if it didn't sell out.
