Great advice and will now try to be an expert in front end editing. That will be very helpful for my environment groups to update their sites. Great advice on security as well. Always great to find extensions that others find useful and rave about.

I have a joomla website and I struggle with it. Hope to god I can understand something tonight.

      Hi Peter,

Your web site looks pretty good, but I can understand how you're having trouble with your menu structure. A little reorganisation of your content and restructuring would probably help considerably. Your categories and menus are not well defined, your site structure is a bit too rigid and you could do with a bit of work on information management. A few well-chosen plugins would also help to separate and clean up your content, e.g. plugins for your newsletter list (not to mention newsletter distribution), your contact forms etc.

If I make it there tonight (weather permitting) I'll try and find you for a quick chat.

      Cheers,

      Russell

Jess - This will be addressed before the next meeting. It isn't a forum and shouldn't be used as such.
Meetup processes aren't controlled by us but will be investigated for options to the current setup and use.
    Thanks for your input.

Is there any way that the discussions could be moved onto the discussion board? My inbox keeps getting full of comments from this meetup that are unrelated to the actual meetup itself and I'm worried I'll miss vital information in the midst (such as the venue change email that came out).

Thanks Max for giving me that learning curve of downloading and installing T3. Unfortunately, changing to the T3 template had no effect - I still couldn't re-order my front-end order of featured articles. But I have found a solution. When I put all my featured articles into the same category then re-ordering takes effect. So re-ordering only works within a category. And Russell, thanks to you I've changed my admin template from Isis to Hathor where there is a table column for typing in ordering sequence. Thanks guys, couldn't have got here without you.

Shouldn't comments like this be using the discussions section of this group on meetup? Then the comments could be found later, rather than lost with this event when it has passed. And besides, everyone is getting these comments even though probably not interested.

      February 12, 2013

    • Russell S.

Joan, the Isis template does have that column in the Featured Articles view. Yes, the sort order is specific to categories, I should have asked you about that. Also, these comments should actually be on the MJUG forums at http://www.joomla.org... ... but they aren't, and this isn't the first time a technical discussion has grown on this list.

Shane, TD121 is in a completely different building in another area of the university. It's amongst the TAFE buildings on Park Street, on the north side of the railway line instead of the south side where the ATC building is. I think you will need to publish maps or provide directions for visitors. There is one version of a map in this PDF: http://www.swinburne.edu.au/orientation/resources/docs/hawthorn/programs/TAFE_orient_Centre_Lifelong_Learning-Sem_1-2011.pdf

Malcolm is in India until 15th and is confirming all dates when he returns. . This is the large lecture theatre on the ground floor of the building he is in.

      that's a bit sad ... stuck away in the old buildings :( Should be OK tho ... they have 3 campuses worth of fundingand only one campus, so the facilities should be amazing now (-;

Thanks Russell for confirming it's a bug. It was a learning exercise to confront it - I think I've investigated every single option menu in J3.0 during my search for a not-so-obvious override. I think I might follow Max's advice and try J2.5 plus a responsive template. Pity - I like the simplicity of J3.0 naked.

    February 11, 2013

    • Max

hey Joan. try running on the T3 front-end starter template form http://t3-framework.o... on J3 before abandoning J3.first and see if it then works ... might be the default J3 front-end template ... as I haven't come across that issue before and pretty much everything we're doing now is in J3.

  • Joan

Thanks Russell and Max. My J3.0 Featured Articles table doesn't have a ordering column - it has a "sort table by" box. Using the drag & drop feature on the first column I can change the back-end ordering no sweat but it has no impact on the front-end ordering. If I can't resolve this I will have to revert to J2.5 plus a responsive template as Max advises although the J3.0 default responsive template suits me fine. This is my first web site so no investment in either J2.5 or 3.0 - just want a bare bones layout.

    February 10, 2013

    • Russell S.

Joan, you are right. I set up a menu item of the type 'featured articles' and set the ordering of the articles shown on that menu item page to be 'Featured Articles Order', and sure enough, the articles on that menu page do not obey the ordering in the Featured Articles manager view. I tried a number of global- and menu item-level options, but as you said, it doesn't work. Turns out this was posted as a bug report a month ago. There was a comment yesterday ( http://forum.joomla.o...] ) that it was fixed in Joomla! 3.0.3, but I have that release and I'm still seeing this bug.

Hey Guys, before the next meet-up would appreciate some help with J3.0. After Brian Teeman's tutorial have done a clean install with no sample data and have two test pages up. Can reorder my blog articles (on blog article page) but can't reorder featured articles (on featured article page) - whatever setting I change, featured articles are still published in their creation order (even unpublishing and republishing in different sequence doesn't change order.) Changing order in J2.5 was a breeze but I'm stumped on J3.0. Want a responsive website so want to persevere with J3.0. Help. Joan

    February 8, 2013

    • Russell S.

Hi Joan. Click the Ordering column heading in the Featured Articles list and the Ordering column items will change to give you repositioning arrows and entry fields for list order. This is the same technique that was used in Joomla! 2.5. Cheers ...

      February 8, 2013

    • Max

Also, don't need J3 for reposnsive site, just a responsive template .. Joostrap works on 2.5 and 3 ... responsive all the time ;)
