  • You didn't mention if you were considering a Canoe or Kayak. My wife and I put our canoe on our Prius with foam pad carrier (campmor - $45) for local trips but it is really not secure enough for highway travel. I dented my first kayak by using foam pads in hot weather and not tying it down correctly. Plastic kayaks can bend easily so proper mounting is important. Yakima makes a tower (The connector) for nearly all car makes and models.

  • Hi Cindy,
Welcome. I took the Kayaking class through the Nicolet High School Recreation Department. They are on-line at https://rec.nicolet.k12.wi.us. The instructor teaches independently too. he can be found at www.aquaguideandoutfitter.com Try Dunhams for the kayak. Very reasonable.

  • Welcome to the group Cindy! Glad you found us through Eerehwon (great store!). We paddle in the Mequon area once or twice a year, and then all over the Fox Valley and other places too. There are some spare boats available at times through members of the group so maybe you can join us on the water before you buy one.

  • “Hi! any advice on what to purchase as a beginner??”
Kayak or Canoe? What kind of water? My advice, don't buy something expensive for your first boat. Figure out what kind of paddling environment you enjoy the most and see what other paddlers are using there. If you are ever in Madison, stop at Rutabaga and ask to check out their used boat yard. It's right on the water and they will let you try out a few boats and you can see what you like. No obligation to buy.

  • Thanks for your reply Cindy, I won't be at Vino 100 today either, but I really like that place- Rodney my 11 year old minature poodle and I will be there again a few times this summer. I hope your business is going well and you're enjoying the slightly cooler temps up in Port- one of my favorite cities in this area.

  • Hi Cindy, I'm a world traveler as well as a small dog lover, I'd like to hear about your experiences living over in London sometime, that must have been very interesting and exciting. Hope you're enjoying living here now and being in this group.
