I just purchased a 1969 Karmann Ghia Convertible in need of major restoration. I plan to do a "body off" restoration and will likely need some help. This is my first VW so it will be a learning experience.

  •  Thanks Kerry. I'm glad you have this group. I was wondering if you can tell me who you take your car to. I actually take ours to International Auto Specialists in Fredericksburg, there pretty good, although I got some front end work done by Grant at Northside Automotive in Madison, VA. They do restorations. They had some beautiful VWs when I took my SB up there.

  •  Thanks for the welcome. I came real close to buying a Ghia earlier this spring. I can't commit to the meet-up yet, but will see if I can swing it. Have been hoping to meet a few "air-cooled" people in the area. It's a little too hot to go camping in the Westy, our next trip will be at the end of September when we go camping at Assateague. Next year I'm hoping to take a week or two and cruise and camp the Blue Ridge Parkway. Meet you soon.

  •  I am not sure... I really just want to figure out what the knock is and why she now overheats if I go more than 20 miles. I am thinking that it might be a valve or cylinder problem on cylinder 3 (because that is where I have isolated the sound to) and I want to put in a new doghouse oil cooler and fan. I would just hate to go through a partial rebuild only to find that the problem was deeper. My experience with rebuilding is very limited I have done several "pluck and swap" operations.

  •  Thanks for the offer. I am going to look into the cost for the parts.

  •  Thanks for the complement. My Ghia is a 1971. I was thinking about rebuilding it myself, I just have no experience with doing a complete overhaul and I am afraid I will just do more damage. How long do you think it would take to rebuild?
