Hey Van! Glad you joined up with us. I hope I can get some vacation time soon and we'll go backpacking.
Hi, Van. Have you checked out the Tom Brown Tracker School group on Yahoo? Tom's books have a lot of info on tracking and making stuff in the wild. I've learned a lot from the online group, as well (who knew spanish moss was so useful?). They might also have some ideas about kayak making. I wonder if anyone might like to coop a kayak - everyone pitches in on cost and labor. Would you, then, time-share the kayak? Hmmm....
Hey Van, appreciate the H'lo! Off-again-on-ag
ain guitar. Three ways to build homespun kayaks: First: Willow branches, Duck cloth, and a mixture of asphaltum and sealer (I saw two, they were crude, but cool). Second: Fame of thin strips of hardwood/ laminated hardwood, Nylon heavyweight cloth, with West-system water-proofing epoxy rolled on, and somewhat pressed in on both sides. *extremely light, and durable* In the article I read, guy made an enitre SAILBOAT this way. Third: wood/west sys.
Yes, Van, it is a great job. I hike, boat, kayak, bird watch, wildflower hunt, eagle spot and teach others about nature and the animals that live there all in the course of my day. I hate that I missed the meeting the other night, but I had to do a program that evening, kinda last minute scheduling fiasco. I hope to make it in May. DeGray Lake Resort State Park.
Yes, in the purest sense, mead is merely wine made from honey. However, it can be much more complicated that that. I have never made mead, mainly because it does not suit my particular pallet, but if you want a good resource on making mead, one of the very best is gotmead.com.
Van: Thanks for the 411. I do want to check those two out. I have the Arkansas Waterfalls book (bought it at Pinnacle Mtn St. Park), so I have descriptions of both. I am looking forward to summer coming and getting out more. It is my principal source of exercise and decompression.

Hey thats awesome, I would definately enjoy that, and Im sure its a got beautiful scenery. I think you and I would probably do good on the picture aspect of it, I love taking pictures, as a matter of fact, I just got back from Colorado, the people I went with made fun of me as I took like a million pics of random things. Anyways hope to see ya some time!
Hi Van, Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to the meeting in March. Been a awhile since I've done much outdoors and looking forward to getting back into it. Fishing to me is a kick backed relaxing thing. I like the throw your line off a dock or shore and watch the beauty and scenery until a fish bites. Mostly I seem to feed worms to the fish. LOL! But it's enjoyable and relaxing to me.
Dude! Ultimate Frisbee is the best! Its like football/soccer
but with a frisbee. Field is half the size of football field, with 7 players on each side. Every person can throw and catch the frizz. Object is to throw frizz downfield to a teammate into the end zone for a score. You can't run with the frizz, but you can run all over if you don't have it. use as many throws as you need, but when it hits the ground or other team swats it down it is a turnover. great exercise and fun fun fun
