Comcast Cable also carries a Latino tier that has channels 610 thru 613. I think it islike $2.99 per month and you can change your SAP (secondary audio programming) to Spanish on your TV and cable.

These are great ideas!! I will definitely start coming to the meet up sessions now!! I'm a vegan, I don't eat any meat or animal biproducts and I wasn't sure if the restaurant of choice could accomodate my dietary needs, so I didn't come to any of the meet ups. I'm excited about the ideas that the group has created. I look forward to meeting everyone and rekindling my love of learning the language. See you at the next meeting!!

Last night we had our first Spanish meetup since the group was reorganized and had a great time.  There were six of us at the Tacqueria Guadalupana.  We talked about why we were leaning Spanish, experiences learning other languages, a bit about work, and other things.  We also talked about ideas for future meetups and came up with the following:

  • See a Spanish-language movie in the theater
  • Get a DVD movie in Spanish and watch it at a library meeting room or someplace else where we can get a TV screen
  • Attend events held by the hispanic community.  This could be helping on a volunteer day, going to a festival, or some other kind of activity
  • Try some different restaurants.  One that was recommended was Los Pilares near Hickory Hill & Mt. Moriah.

We are of course open to other suggestions, so let me know if you have any other ideas.

We also suggested some ways to learn Spanish other than a class.  Here are some ideas:
  • Rosetta Stone
  • Pimsleur  (note:  the Memphis Library (and perhaps others) has the introductory packages available for checkout so you can try it for free)
  • Spanishpod  - this site offers free lessons in mp3 form that you can play on your ipod, mp3 player, or on your computer.  You only pay if you want written material.

Finally, we mentioned that those of us with Netflix memberships have a a huge selection of Spanish-language movies we can get for group meetings.  When talking about this I mentioned this video story from The Onion about a historic Blockbuster store showing how movies were rented in the past.  This has nothing to do with Spanish but I wanted to share the link since I brought it up.

I have scheduled our next meeting for June 26th at the Taqueria Guadalupana again.  In the meantime we will look into the other ideas for meetings and try to arrange some different activities.

Thanks to all who came, and we hope to see the rest of you next time.

Beirne
