We are very excited to announce our next Metaverse Meetup!

As many of you may already know, IBM and Linden Labs recently announced a historic breakthrough in virtual worlds: "...research teams from the two companies successfully teleported avatars from the Second Life Preview Grid into a virtual world running on an OpenSim server, marking the first time an avatar has moved from one virtual world to another".

The topic for this Metaverse Meetup will be OpenSim and virtual worlds interoperability and we are very fortunate to be featuring leading pioneers of OpenSim as presenters: David Levine of IBM Research (Zha Ewry in SL) and Adam Frisby of DeepThink Labs (Adam Zaius in SL). Other members of OpenSim have also been invited to take part and Tish Shute, who writes about OpenSim on her blog Ugotrade, will serve as a guest moderator.

This Metaverse Meetup will be an excellent not-to-be-missed opportunity to learn more about OpenSim directly from its most influential developers and discuss with fellow Metaverse Meetuppers how all this may affect the future of virtual worlds. We invite you to come and participate.

Also, a reminder that this Saturday, July 19th, is the final day of the "Tourists and Travelers" exhibition at Eyebeam, featuring Taeyoon Choi's "Camerautomata Charlie: Image Digesting Robotic Duck" that travels around NYC, shooting and printing pictures of tourists; and Joseph DeLappe's "The Salt Satyagraha Online— Gandhi’s Salt March in Second Life", work derived from his 240 mile walk on a treadmill and in cyberspace.

    I realize meeting space is an expense. So, charge $10, these people can mainly afford it. Look for business sponsors. Find somebody's law firm that has catering built into their conference, pick the back room of the Afghan or Chinese restaurant that seats forty -- there are ways to get this done.

    I tend to agree with Frank Dellario. Somehow, a happier medium has to be struck between the incredibly noisy and crowded and therefore unproductive Art Lounge place down on the Lower East Side, and an office conference room where constraints like no service of even coffee/soft drinks and having to quickly leave the room on a schedule, and sit in uncomfortable plastic chairs with air conditioning waning.

    • “ I thought that not being ready with the projector and the connection in SL was a distraction and that it took away from the effectiveness of the meeting. The speakers were also difficult to hear and sometimes their thoughts were not clear. However, I did enjoy speaking with some of the attendees. As is often the case, it is were the most interesting conversations take place, so creating a space for people to talk is essential. Refreshment would be a good thing to encourage such interaction. ”
    • “ More meetup and less lecture. What I like and what worked about meetups in the past, is the setup was for people to meet and mingle, and the host made sure to introduce people, no one was off on their own not knowing anyone. sitting and waiting half hour for a lecture to start in chairs, no fun. Better when the focus is on mingleing like in past, and then speaker would be introduced and their talk was more of added benifit to the meetup. This was like a panel at a conference, boring. ”
    • “ This Metaverse Meetup was totally awesome! Adam Frisby and David Levine gave us incredible insight into OpenSim and shared compelling details that really expanded on what has previously been known about its amazing potential and revolutionary role in the future of the metaverse. Tish Shute was great as the guest moderator, asking key questions and adding salient commentary. It was so nice to see all the familiar regulars as well as meet the new ones. In true Metaverse Meetup style, we migrated en mass to a local bar where we continued the conversation about all things metaversal and had fun hanging out with fellow avatars until the late hours. ”
    • “ I really enjoyed learning more about OpenSim as well as the larger issues of interoperability asset management and intellectual property. Very thought provoking stuff. Thanks guys for working so hard to put this one together. Was a good mix of formality and fun. ”
