Getting "Google Love" for Your WordPress Site presented by Tim Yow

Background: Worked for Network Solutions, now has his own company YowSEO

Shout out for WordPress for SEO plugin from Yoast

"I know I need to be on page 1 of Google. But what difference does it make?"

Simple description of Search Engine Optimization: Modifying a bunch of stuff on a web page and stuff that points to that web page that will make it extra clear to the search engine what that page is about.

Detailed description of Search Engine Optimization: Modifying elements on a web page and information on pages elsewhere on the web referencing that page to make the theme of the page clear to non-human data collectors used by the search engines (called spiders or robots/bots) so the page is listed high in searches related to that theme.

Is it clear to people? Is it clear to search engines?

I'm ignoring link building today because:

* want to focus our attention on WordPress functionality and plugins for on-page SEO
* idea behind link building and improving popularity should be about creating compelling content

Why does SEO matter?

* shoutout to Jerry Seinfeld's YouTube second place video - congratulations: you almost won
* you need to grab people's attention, and make sure they see your info first
* Page 2: ~94% of people will never click to page 2 (link?) - study from Cornell - need link
* People will refine their search before going to page 2

Second Place?

* Positions 2-5 combined get less clicks than number 1 position
* Study showed ~56% of people click on position 1 results
* For some reason position 7 is less than position 8 (in fact, top of page 2 is higher than position 7)
* Position 1 on page 2 can be more important than positions at bottom of page 1

Order of importance of on-page elements (per Tim)

1. Title Tag
2. URL structure - Permalinks
3. META Description
4. Main Heading: Controlled by text editor
5. Sub-headings
6. Internal links
7. Anchor Text for internal links
8. Bold text
9. Image Alt Text
10. Main content

Note: meta keywords don't matter. Don't share your keywords, only benefit is to your competitors

1. Title tag is the most important item on your page.

1. 60-75 characters (Google just made change to the display)-> Free CDL Practice Test Online, Sample Questions and Answers
2. Put keywords near front of title

2. URL structure

1. Default URL with ?p=111 -> not good
2. Include keywords in URLs
3. Category pages are beneficial to you - > within Yoast plugin, you have option to block search engines from the category pages,, if you choose

3. Meta description

1. Google will usually use the meta description, or may opt to take content from the page, or rarely, will take the listing from DMOZ
2. One or two sentences, use keywords in your meta description
3. Should compel the search engine user to click your listing
4. If possible, put keywords toward front of meta description (but don't force it to sound awkward)

4. Main heading

1. Will be set to the page name
2. Don't wast this element by using Welcome or About Us, use About our web development and design services
3. Use something descriptive

5. Sub-headings

1. Try to use keywords in your headings
2. Breaking up text with headings is good for usability

6. Internal Links
7. Anchor Text

1. Improve internal linking by repeating the navigation options, link to appropriate pages within the main text, and adding a sitemap page
2. When possible, use text links instead of graphics and buttons
3. Use meaningful anchor text, not "Click Here" or "Read More"

8. Bold text

1. Emphasize keyword phrases
2. Don't over-do

9. Image ALT text
10. Main content

1. Don't stuff keywords
2. Focus on your end user - make it readable by people

Redirects

* Simple 301 Redirect plugin
* Redirection - plugin
